Six Of The Best As Wales Brush Past Kosovo

Wales continued their excellent start to their EURO 2025 qualifying campaign with a confident 6-0 win in Kosovo.

Braces by Rachel Rowe and Elise Hughes as well as strikes from Ffion Morgan and Kayleigh Barton led Wales to their second win in as many games under new manager Rhian Wilkinson.

Jess Fishlock, captaining the side for her 150th cap, was excellent again, setting up both first half goals by Rowe and Barton.

She is the first Wales player to reach the 150-cap mark, having made her debut in 2006.

The 37-year-old has started in 148 of her 150 Wales appearances and incredibly has featured in 66% of Wales’ international matches under Football Association of Wales affiliation.

After half an hour of stubborn defence from the home side, Fishlock’s lay off to Rowe broke the Kosovo defence open and the Rangers winger drilled a low, first-time shot into the bottom corner.

Thirteen minutes later, Wales had doubled the lead.

A beautiful 16-pass move gave Fishlock space and time to turn and thread a perfectly weighted ball through to Barton, whose deft finish found the bottom corner, doubling Wales’ lead before the interval.

Wilkinson shuffled the pack in the second half heat, with Ffion Morgan, Angharad James, Rhiannon Roberts, and Elise Hughes all given time on the grass.

Kosovo were once again obdurate at the start of the second half and it took another attractive Welsh passing move to extend their lead.

The newly-introduced James moved the ball up the pitch in combination with Josie Green and Rowe.

Rowe eventually skipped inside and played a one-two with James. She then looked up and shoots from the corner of the box and beat Alma Demiri in the Kosovo with the help of a little flick off the boot of Blerta Smaili.

For Wales’ fourth, it was Rowe who turned provider. Ceri Holland found her unmarked the right side of the box and her low ball across the box was met by an arriving Morgan who only had to tap in at the back post.

By now, an hour into the game, Wales were firmly on top. Hughes and now-former captain Ingle could only put the ball over the bar from close range.

Hughes, though, would capitalise on some tired legs to add to her Wales goal tally.

After more good work from Holland, James broke down the right from a rare Kosovo freekick. The Seattle Reign midfielder found Hughes who played an extended one-two with Holland.

The Liverpool midfielder took on the Kosovo right-back Rrezona Ramadani and crossed for Hughes to finish into an open net via the hand of Demiri.

Deep into stoppage time, Hughes completed the rout.

Fishlock, relentless throughout, played a perfectly weighted ball over the top to Holland who nodded the ball across for Hughes to calmly finish on the volley.

It was an exquisite way to cap an excellent second win of Wilkinson’s reign and EURO 2025 qualifying.

Post-Match Reaction

Afterwards, Rachel Rowe said that Wales “needed to find their feet” in the game.

“I think we did especially in the second half, we had multiple attempts and it was a convincing win for us,” said Rowe.

“We have such a diverse group in experience, I think we’ve got leaders in this squad, it doesn’t matter how many caps you’ve got, we all play our part.”

Fellow goalscorer, Ffion Morgan said that she was “buzzing” to get her goal.

“I looked twice to see if the flag had gone up for offside,” said the Bristol City player.

“It’s probably on my mother’s Facebook already, it’s a proud moment for me and my family.

“It was on a plate for me, It was probably harder to miss. It just shows the work we’re doing is coming out on the pitch, we created multiple opportunities today.

“I hope with my pace and my ability to get forward that she [Rhian Wilkinson] likes that. She gives me the confidence to get at people, I constantly hear her on the sideline pushing me up the field. That confidence is very helpful.

“Hopefully, I can keep this going and get some more opportunities.”
