Cardiff secured top spot with a resounding 39-7 victory over Merthyr, guaranteeing them a home Play-Off semi-final against Newport RFC at Cardiff Arms Park on 14 May.

In the meantime, Llandovery suffered a 52-33 loss to Newport at Rodney Parade, but they will still host a semi-final against Merthyr next week. Pontypridd ended their season on a high note, earning a 29-10 bonus point win against Swansea.

At halftime, Cardiff found themselves trailing 7-3 against Merthyr at the break, but five second-half tries were enough to secure a home semi-final against Newport.

Dewi Cross scored twice for Cardiff, bringing his season total to 19 tries, matching the record for a 12-team league in the Welsh Premiership.

Newport won an exciting match at home against second-placed Llandovery, demonstrating their ability before the playoffs. The Black and Ambers secured a bonus point through Ioan Davies, who picked up a loose ball and ran unopposed for 65 meters.

Matt O’Brien added a penalty to extend their lead to ten points before Llandovery’s Lee Rees showed off his footballing abilities to reduce the deficit.

Aaron Warren then scored in the corner to give Llandovery the lead. However, two yellow cards left the Drovers short-handed, and Newport capitalized with three late tries to secure a convincing 52-33 victory.

This result will give the Black and Ambers confidence as they seek revenge against Cardiff, who defeated them in the WRU Premiership Cup last month.

Pontypridd, the Valley Commandos, finished the season on a high note, earning a bonus point victory to surpass Swansea in the league table.

Fijian Niko Matawalu helped his side take a 5-3 lead into halftime in a tight contest at Sardis Road. Pontypridd picked up the pace in the second half, with Nathan Huish, Kristian Parker, and Aled Ward all scoring tries to end the season on a positive note.

Swansea did manage to score a consolation try through Gareth Rees after some excellent build-up play from James Davies, but they finished the season with a defeat.

Welsh Boxing Makes History: Lauren Price And Jay Harris Crowned British Champions

Welsh Boxing now seems to be synonymous with big nights and it celebrated another historic night as Lauren Price and Jay Harris added to the country’s British Champions list.

The pair joined Sean McGoldrick and Gavin Gwynne to hold an impressive four titles, with Harris earning a hard-fought 10th round stoppage against Tommy Frank to emulate the achievements of his father, Peter, who won the belt 35 years ago.

Meanwhile, Price made history by beating Kirstie Bavington in the first British Female Welterweight Championship title in Birmingham.

In only her fourth professional fight, the 28-year-old from Ystrad Mynach secured her first Championship title, adding to her illustrious collection of European, Commonwealth, World, and Olympic gold medals won during her stunning amateur career.

Price dominated the fight, and all three judges scored the fight 100-90, showcasing her immense quality as she looks to build towards a World title shot in the coming years.

Harris also returned the British Flyweight Championship to the Harris household after his father’s win, ending any speculation or fear of potential retirement by stopping Frank in the 10th round.

It was ten years since Harris’s debut, but after a tough opening spell of the fight, he began to turn the tide and take control of the fight.

The boxer from Swansea joined the likes of Colin Jones, Enzo Maccarinelli, Nathan Cleverly, and Lee Selby to become the tenth Welsh boxer to win a triple crown of British, Commonwealth, and European honors.

Harris said: “Look, that was one of the best wins I’ve had. Credit to Tommy, man. He came out and gave me one hell of a fight. This is probably the most important belt to myself because my dad won it back in the day.

“It’s nice now to have a father and son in the history books who have won the British title. Making history.”

Cricket:

Glamorgan ran out of time to bowl Yorkshire out on the final day of their LV Championship Division Two clash at Headingley, as the weather frustrated their efforts.

Marnus Labuschagne, Glamorgan’s Australian test pair, put Glamorgan in a great position to win the game on days two and three.

Michael Neser, his Australian and teammate, took a career-best 7-32 as Glamorgan bowled out the hosts for 106 in the first innings.

Labuschagne hit an unbeaten 170 as he helped Glamorgan to 352-4 declared, setting Yorkshire 492 to win. It looked a daunting task for Adam Lyth and his side with Glamorgan needed ten wickets to seal their first win of the season.

Late wickets from Tim van der Gugten gave Glamorgan a chance to win the game. But a defiant 174 from Adam Lyth and 55* for Jordan Thompson ensured their side batted out the remaining overs of day 4 to hold on to a draw.

Table Tennis

Wales’ women’s table tennis team secured qualification to the European Championships in Malmo with a 3-1 victory against Finland.

Commonwealth Games bronze medalists Charlotte Carey and Anna Hursey got the Welsh team off to the perfect start, winning both games 3-0 against Marina Donner and A Titievskaja to give Wales a healthy 2-0 lead.

Although Finland pulled a game back when Ramona Betz held on for a tight 3-2 victory against Wales’ Laura Whitton, Anna Hursey sealed European qualification for Wales with a 3-0 victory against Donner.

Swansea City and Cardiff City Experience Contrasting Emotions On Final Day Of Championship Season

It was mixed fortunes for the South Wales clubs in the Championship. Swansea City snatched a stunning 3-2 victory against West Bromich Albion, in front of a bumper 20,294, thanks to a late Joel Piroe freekick, while Cardiff City fell to a 3-0 defeat against Burnley, who secured promotion to the Premier League.

West Brom took the lead twice through Okay Yokuslu at the Swansea.com stadium, threatening a late push into the Championship playoff places.

But Martin’s side showed great character to turn the game on its head late on. Luke Cundle equalised early in the first half before Olivier Ntcham made it 2-2 after 66 minutes.

Russell Martin was left seething after referee Keith Stroud failed to give his Swansea side a controversial penalty decision after Olly Cooper was brought down late on.

However, the Swans had the final word with a stunning curled freekick from Starman Joel Piroe to make it 3-2 in the 93rd minute, sealing Swansea’s seventh win in nine games. Martin’s side finished the season with 23 points out of a possible 29.

It was a mistake at the back from the hosts that allowed West Brom to take an early lead. John Swift had all the time in the world to find a simple pass to Okay Yokoslu, who stroked the ball into the back of the net.

Swansea were finally able to break through West Brom’s compact 442 with some neat build-up play between Paterson and Luke Cundle, allowing the latter to produce a cool finish past Alex Palmer to level the game.

It was a bright start to the second half for the Swans, who wasted two glorious chances with both Paterson and Piroe putting their efforts wide of the target.

West Brom retook the lead when Semi Ajeyi connected with a stunning volley, which he rifled home into the roof of the net, after Swansea failed to clear another dangerous corner from the visitors.

The Swans continued to attempt to break down a resilient Baggies defensive effort, but it took a bit of magic from Olivier Ntcham who struck home from outside the box, making it 2-2 in the 65th minute.

Any penalty claims Swansea had when Olly Cooper was brought down in the box were quickly turned down by Stroud, who waved on play, before Ryan Manning was fouled just outside the box.

It was a moment made for Swansea’s Dutch striker, Joel Piroe, who curled the ball into the bottom left-hand corner for his 19th Championship goal of the season, sealing a 3-2 win for Swansea City.

Cardiff City knew they would have a tough day at Turf Moor, with Burnley having already secured promotion back to the Premier League as Champions.

It was a bright start for both sides, with Burnley having a chance through Ashley Barnes before Rubin Colwill and Connor Wickham failed to find the contact needed to finish off some excellent work from Mahlon Romeo out wide.

The hosts finally broke the deadlock before the half-hour mark when Jordan Brownhill scored his sixth goal of the season with a simple tap-in. The Clarets then doubled their lead just four minutes later with a gorgeous half-volley from the departing Barnes.

It was 3-0 before the hour mark when free-kick specialist Scott Twine curled a stunning effort from just outside the box past the helpless Ryan Allsop to help Burnley gain complete control of the game.

Cardiff City’s manager Sabri Lamouchi looked to Sory Kaba on the bench to inspire a late comeback, and the City striker on loan from FC Midtjylland made an instant impact, forcing Adam Muric into a smart stop, but it was not enough to inspire a comeback for the Bluebirds, who finished the season in 21st position with 13 wins and 10 draws.

In their final game against Crewe Alexandra, Newport County were held to a 2-2 draw, with a last-minute equalizer from Crewe’s Lachlan Brook ensuring that the points were shared at Rodney Parade.

Rio Adebisi had given the visitors the lead after 56 minutes, but two late goals from Newport’s Omar Bogle had seemingly secured the three points for County.

However, Brook’s strike three minutes into injury time meant Newport had to settle for just one point to end their campaign.

Cardiff City’s Championship survival was secured last week, but the Bluebirds have had a disappointing season and currently sit 19th, just five points above the relegation zone.

Welsh Boxing Reigns Supreme: Price and Harris Aim to Add to Impressive Welsh Title Tally

Saturday night promises to be a historic occasion as Wales’ Lauren Price takes on Kirstie Bavington, as the pair go head-to-head in the inaugural British women’s Welterweight Championship.

The highly anticipated showdown will take place over 10 rounds at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, with Price facing an early test in her professional career, having had just three pro fights so far.

However, the Olympic champion will be keen to prove her worth after a successful eight-rounder against Naomi Mannes in her last outing.

Bavington boasts an unbeaten record of six fights, four of which have ended in knockout victories. Price will be aware that Bavington, known for her aggressive style, will be determined to win, particularly since they are fighting in her hometown.

It was Olympic fever during the 2012 Olympic Games that started Price’s rapid rise in the sport of boxing, having been inspired by Nicola Adams winning her Olympic gold medal.

Just under ten years later, it was Price who struck gold at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but now the southpaw from Ystrad Mynach has her sights set on the inaugural British Women’s Welterweight Championship.

It is a far cry from being capped by Wales’ senior football team back in 2012, having won the Women’s Welsh Premier League and several Kickboxing World titles, but Price continues to dream, and she usually finds a way to make her dreams become a reality.

MALE BOXING

Jay Harris will also step into the ring this weekend for his highly anticipated bout against Tommy Frank, as he hopes to become the new British Flyweight Champion.

If he is successful, he would become Wales’ third current British Champion after Sean McGoldrick and Gavin Gwynne, or fourth if Price is also successful this weekend.

Harris, who has a record of 19 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, will be facing a tough challenge in Frank, who holds a record of 14 wins and 1 loss and will be defending his title for the second time.

However, the Swansea boxer has been in fine form in recent fights, winning his last 5 matches, including a knockout victory over Hector Gabriel Acosta in his most recent bout.

CRICKET

In Cricket, Glamorgan endured a tough opening day to their LV= Division Two Championship clash against Yorkshire in Headingly, but they put themselves on top heading into the weekend.

The hosts won the toss and opted to bowl, and their decision was rewarded after Ben Coad took the early wickets of Glamorgan captain David Lloyd and stand-in opener Andrew Salter.

It was an important 82-run partnership between the world’s number one test batsman, Marnus Labuschagne, and Sam Northeast that had helped the Welsh county get into their groove.

Northeast fell just before making his half-century, while Labuschagne continued his stiff resistance before losing his wicket for 65.

There were cameos from Billy Root and Tim van der Gugten, but Glamorgan were eventually bowled out for 245. Yorkshire would have been buoyed with their excellent start, but Glamorgan’s bowlers produced a superb spell before the close to reduce their rivals to 62-5.

Van der Gugten continued his excellent season, taking the wickets of both Finlay Bean and Adam Lyth, before Australian paceman Michael Neser picked up three further wickets ahead of the close of play.

But if Glamorgan are  to continue their excellent start, they will have to see off England test pair Dawid Malan and Bairstow, who stuck in as the day came to a close.

The Warriors opened the scoring with a stunning try through McDowall. It was a tough opening period for the Scarlets who fought back with two penalties from Costelow and a try from Evans, helping them into a lead of 14-7 at half-time.

It was a positive start from Phil Parkinson’s side. However, Torquay United dug in deep to make Wrexham work hard for a draw on the final day of the season.

The Reds had an opportunity to go ahead within the first five minutes at Plainmoor stadium, but Paul Mullin’s effort was stopped by Mark Halstead.

The first half was tight, with both teams fighting for every ball, but Wrexham managed to take a 0-0 scoreline into the break. The hosts then took the lead early in the second half through Nouble, but a late Elliot Lee equalizer ensured a draw for the National League Champions.

Swansea City extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to eight games after drawing 1-1 against Hull City at the MKM Stadium.

After conceding an early own goal, the Swans looked to build back into the game, creating several half-chances at goal. However, it was their patient build-up play that helped Russell Martin’s side level the scoreline.

Jamie Paterson found a pocket of space and was able to find Luke Cundle, who equalized with a fine strike.

The match proved to be a special occasion for Swansea’s captain, Matthew Grimes, who made his 250th appearance, but neither side was able to break the deadlock before the final whistle.

Record 8th Wicket Partnership Between Chris Cooke and Michael Neser Secures Glamorgan Draw

Harry Corish - Sportin Journalist

Harry Corish - Sportin Journalist

Glamorgan battled hard in their LV County Championship Division Two game against Leicestershire to earn a third draw of the season, moving up to 5th in the table.

Leicestershire piled on the runs in their first innings, posting 407 thanks to a sublime 95 from former Australian international Peter Handscombe and 90 from England’s Rehan Ahmed. But the Welsh county fought back in the second innings, scoring 465 themselves.

Despite losing captain David Lloyd early on, 51 from Eddie Byrom and 64 from Marnus Labuschagne settled the nerves, but their dismissals started a small-scale collapse in the middle order.

However, an important 40 from Sam Northeast and a record eighth-wicket partnership of 211 between Chris Cooke and Michael Neser steered Glamorgan beyond Leicestershire’s total. Glamorgan were eventually bowled out for 465, with a lead of 49.

Despite the early wicket of Solomon Budinger, who nicked off to Michael Neser, a 103 partnership between Rishi Patel and captain Lewis Hill all but ended any hopes of a Glamorgan win.

But with Leicestershire on 252-3 in their second innings the sides shook hands as the game remained deadlocked on the fourth day. The Welsh County left Leicestershire with ten points as they continued their unbeaten start to the season.

It was a fantastic weekend of sports action in Wales, none more so than the events that kicked off on Friday night, as Welsh boxing held its National Championship Finals at the Sport Wales National Centre.

Leah Reach (Llanrumney) beat Josie Lewis (Caerau Dragons) in the 50kg final before Scott Richards (Pontypridd ABC) became a two-weight Welsh Boxing Elite Champion, holding off Jack Collier (Premier) and winning the bout by split decision.

There were further wins for Commonwealth Games athletes Zoe Andrews (Britton Ferry) at 54kg and Owain Harris-Allen (Apollo’s) at 57kg. Joe Louis Wright (Army) and Carys Mainwaring (RAF) also won titles at 60kg, while Daniel Walshe (Prince of Wales) and Kian Davies (Prizefighter) won in their weight categories.

Benjamin Edwards (Llynfi Valley), Lewis Parfitt (Maerdy), Haaris Khan (Grange), Joshua Mellor (Cardigan), Connor Williams (Premier), Alireza Maleki (Caerau Ely), and Sophia dos Santos (St Clare’s) all added further wins.

In squash, Wales’ men’s and women’s sides created history over the weekend, reaching the semi-finals of the European Team Squash Championships for the first time.

The women’s side, headed by Tesni Evans, picked up a bronze medal, while the men’s side, which featured world number 10 Joel Makin, finished in fourth place.

In table tennis, Commonwealth Games Champion Joshua Stacey made a fine start to Paralympic qualification, taking silver in the men’s class 9 of the Greek Para Open.

Stacey had swept aside Japanese World number 7 Koyo Iwabuchi to set up a mouth-watering final against Belgian Laurens Devos. The 22-year-old Devos, who is a two-time World and Paralympic Champion, quickly raced into a 1-0 lead.

The Welshman, Stacey, hit back but lost the second game 11-7 despite leading it 6-1. Stacey took the third game, but the Belgian sealed the title with a 3-1 win overall, continuing his remarkable unbeaten run since 2015.
