Scarlets Suffer Seven-try Home Defeat
Carwyn Harris
Scarlets suffered their 14th defeat of the season as they fell to a dismal 3-45 defeat at home to Glasgow at Parc Y Scarlets.
Tries from Kyle Rowe, Gregor Hiddleston, Scott Cummings along with a penalty try ensured the visitors had the bonus point wrapped up with 25 minutes remaining.
The visitors grabbed further tries through Johnny Matthews and two more for Rowe resulting in a seven try to nothing victory.
The game began with the worst possible start for the home side. With three minutes on the clock Wales international Tom Rogers took Rowe out in the air, resulting in a yellow card.
Rogers was perhaps fortunate the Scottish international landed on his back rather than his head to save him from further punishment.
Glasgow took advantage almost immediately, benefitting from a scrappy passage where neither team could keep possession before spreading the ball left with Rowe running in unopposed in Rogers’ absence.
Ioan Lloyd responded with a penalty on 17 minutes after an electric break from wing Tomi Lewis, who looked set to score but for a great covering tackle from Argentine wing Sebastián Cancelliere.
That reduced the deficit to four points, but that was as close as it got and indeed the home side failed to threaten for the remainder of the match.
Glasgow turned down kickable penalties consistently opting instead for the corner. After their first effort was repelled, they returned to task, this time with a different result.
Despite being initially pushed back by the Scarlets maul defence, the Glasgow pack swung left with hooker Hiddleston the beneficiary.
Scarlets were architects of their own downfall, and when Lloyd was caught trying to exit from his own in-goal area, Ryan Elias was forced to dive on the ball giving the visitors a scrum five metres out.
However, when Glasgow went blind, they were held up over the line and Scarlets cleared their lines without further punishment.
Scarlets came into the game on the back of a last-minute win against Benetton but following the celebratory scenes last week, there was little to cheer from their first half on Saturday night.
The home side made two changes at half time with Ryan Conbeer replacing Rogers while Lloyd was forced off also with Dan Jones coming on in his place.
Jones’ first touch was to clear his lines, but his kick was charged down by Cummings, with the second row regathering the ball to score.
Glasgow thought they had scored a fourth before 50 minutes but, after Rory Darge’s break, George Horne chose to go himself when it appeared his side had a walk-in down the left wing.
But the reprieve didn’t last long. Following further indiscretions for offside, Glasgow kicked to the corner and this time it ended with a penalty try as Dan Jones became the second Scarlet to go to the sin-bin.
With Dan Jones set to return, Ioan Nicholas missed touch with a penalty and from the resulting counter-attack Sam Lousi put in a no-arms tackle on Horne and was perhaps fortunate to only receive a yellow card.
Again, Glasgow kicked to the corner and there were few surprised when Matthews scored from the resulting driving maul.
Player of the match Rowe added a second after a delicious ball over the top from Stafford McDowall with still 10 minutes remaining which was the cue for some in Scarlet colours to head for the exits.
With the last play of the game, Tom Jordan danced through weak Scarlets tackling finding Rowe for his hattrick to put the final nail in the coffin of a dismal night for the Llanelli based region.
