Gwalia United: Cerys Jones And Yas Davies On Flying The Newport Flag In FA Cup Clash
As Gwalia United prepares to take on Bridgwater in the FA Cup at Newport, four players are poised to make the occasion truly special.
Among them are Jessie Taylor and Shurima Vine, alongside Cerys Jones and Yasmin Davies—not just key figures on the pitch but proud Newport natives as well.
For teacher Cerys, the team’s stalwart defender, and young promising teenage goalkeeper Yasmin, this fixture is more than just another game; it’s a homecoming wrapped in FA Cup magic.
“It’s a dream come true,” says Cerys, reflecting on the opportunity to play in such a prestigious competition in the city where her football journey began.
Growing up in Newport, the FA Cup was always one of those competitions that felt larger than life. To now be part of it, and to play here, is special.”
Former Wales U17s and U19s captain Cerys, known for her unyielding tackles and strong presence at the back, started her footballing journey in Newport before making her way to Brighton and Hove Albion before returning to Wales and to Gwalia United.
She’s earned a reputation as one of the most reliable defenders in the league, and whose powerful tackles often inspire fear into the heart of opposing strikers. But for Cerys, Sunday’s game is about more than personal pride.
“It’s about showing young girls in Newport what’s possible. Hopefully, seeing us out there inspires them to dream big.”
For Yasmin, learning her trade alongside senior Wales international goalkeeper Laura O-Sullivan-Jones ensures a fast-track to a footballing education many could only dream of, but being part of a Gwalia team looking to progress further in the FA Cup in her hometown will be a moment to cherish.
Having recently joined Gwalia United from local rivals Bristol City, her return to Newport marks more than just a career move—it’s a chance to call the city home once again, both for herself and her team.
“Newport has shaped who I am, on and off the pitch,” she explains. “It’s a city with grit and resilience, and I like to think I bring a bit of that to my game.”
Both players recognise the challenge Bridgwater presents, but they’re determined to rise to the occasion.
“The FA Cup is about moments,” Cerys says. “And there’s no better place to create those moments than at home.”
As Newport gets ready to host this exciting FA Cup clash, Cerys and Yasmin are determined to make their mark—not just for Gwalia United, but for the city that shaped them.
For Gwalia fans, Sunday’s match is all about backing their team, but for Newport locals, it’s a chance to rally behind four hometown players shining on the stage of the world’s most famous football competition.
