It was an emotional day for Christian Williams, the trainer of Kitty Light, as he watched his horse canter home to win the Gold Cup Handicap chase at Sandown, just a week on from winning the Scottish Grand National.

The win comes at a difficult time for Williams and his family, after their five-year-old daughter Betsy’s cancer diagnosis.

The Welsh trainer insists the win has brought some much-needed light after a difficult few weeks for his family.

Speaking to BBC, Williams said: “It was a wonderful, wonderful day.

“It’s been a tough few weeks here for everyone – for my wife Charlotte, all my family and friends and my owners.

“It’s been tough, but Kitty has been a flagship horse here for the last two years and winning the Scottish National was a massive boost for everyone, so it was a very emotional day.”

Jonathan Phillips’ Great Britain side got off to the perfect start to their World Championship Division I campaign, beating Korea 4-0 in Nottingham before adding a thrilling 5-4win over Poland.

Ben Lake opened the scoring for the hosts, before Robert Dowd, Cade Neilson and Liam Kirk added three further goals to seal a stunning win for the GB side.

The British side made it two wins from two after defeating Poland 5-4 to get their qualification campaign to a perfect start.

It was Wales’ Phillips who opened the scoring against Poland. The Polish side equalised before the end of the first period. Cadie Neilson helped GB back into the lead before further goals from Liam Kirk, Brett Perlini and Ben Lake.

Great Britain’s hockey team featuring Welshmen Rupert Shipperley and Jacob Draper fell to an agonising defeat against Australia on penalties, after being held to a 3-3 draw to finish off the New Zealand leg of the FIH Pro League.

The Celtic Dragons suffered a 62-56 defeat against fifth-placed Severn Stars in a thrilling Vitality Super League tie at the University of Worcester Arena.

The Dragons trailed 32-23 at halftime but reduced the deficit by the end of the third quarter, with the score at 45-40. Despite the valiant effort from the Welsh side, the Severn Stars held on to secure the win.
