Wrexham Win As Storm Darragh Hits: Welsh Football Weekend Round-Up

Rhodri Evans

Wrexham earnt a hard-fought victory over Burton Albion as Storm Darragh meant that much of the weekend’s football was postponed.

The weather forced the cancelation of matches for Cardiff City and Newport County, as well as a full round of Cymru Premier action.

Swansea City and Wrexham, who both played away from home, managed to play their matches earning a draw and a win respectively.

With damaged sustained to both the Cardiff City and Swansea.com Stadiums, both are expected to be fine for their next home fixtures.

Lee’s Strike Earns Victory for Wrexham

Elliott Lee’s goal directly from a corner was the only goal of the game as Wrexham won a fourth league match in a row at Burton Albion.

Lee’s ball – aimed for the back post – missed everyone and hit the upright before going in. Due to the severe weather conditions, Wrexham’s football was impacted, with much of the match lacking any kind of flow.

Burton, 23rd in League One, were a good match for Wrexham and held out in a cagey first half. The visitors, though, got the job done, much to the relief of manager Phil Parkinson.

“It’s a brilliant performance from us today in very difficult conditions and I thought we played with nous,” Parkinson said.

“That was the key – we made good decisions on the ball and played some good stuff at times but we played the right ball at the right time. We looked like a team who knew what we needed to do.

“We couldn’t get that second goal but all in all the conditions were a huge leveller. Every three points is so crucial and along the course of a nine month season you’ve got to win in different conditions and we’ve done that really well today.”

Swansea Fight Back To Draw

Swansea skipper Matt Grimes’ excellent strike earnt his side a point at Luton Town.

The home side took the lead through Elijah Adebayo against the run of play, as Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski made some excellent saves to keep his side in the lead going into halftime.

Grimes equalised just after the hour mark, firing home after a neat corner routine. Swansea dominated the ball and the chances from then on, but could not find a winner.

“We could have come away with all the points but we gave away a sloppy goal so therefore we rode our luck a little bit,” said Swansea manager Luke Williams.

“Two goals behind against Portsmouth and then a goal behind today, so we are making hard work of these games, but we certainly deserved at least a point.

“We started the game brilliantly well, the first half was a strong performance and in the second half there was no let-up from the lads. I think they really deserved their goal for throwing everything forward.”

Gwalia’s Cup Run Ends

Gwalia United’s run in the Women’s FA Cup is over after they were defeated 4-0 by London City Lionesses on Sunday.

Second tier London City, since their takeover by Michelle Kang, have spent money that some Women’s Super League (WSL) would have struggled to match and their experience told.

Gwalia held out for 25 minutes, before Isobel Goodwin opened the scoring and former Everton and Aston Villa forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah doubled the lead in the 40th minute with an excellent curling strike.

Wales international Laura O’Sullivan-Jones kept Gwalia in the game after the break, before internationals Shen Mengyu and Miljana Ivanovic gave the scoreline some gloss in the final ten minutes.

Faced with a difficult draw, Gwalia will have until next season to potentially play one of the biggest teams in women’s football, such as Chelsea or Arsenal.

No Cymru Premier but Adran Trophy Goes Ahead

The full round of Cymru Premier matches were postponed on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but three of the four Genero Adran Trophy quarter final ties went ahead on Sunday.

Prior to the weekend, Bala Town recorded a historic double over TNS, beating the champions 1-0. The result was made all the more remarkable by the fact that Bala’s only two victories since mid-September have come from matches against The New Saints.

With Penybont earning a 1-0 victory over third place Haverfordwest County, TNS are four points behind the leaders, albeit with a game in hand on Penybont.

With both sides taking points off each other this season, it looks as if the Cymru Premier has a proper title race for the first time since Connah’s Quay triumphed over TNS in 2021.

In the Adran Trophy, Swansea City trashed Cascade 0-5, as The New Saints edged Cardiff City 1-0. Briton Ferry Llansawel’s match with Aberystwyth Town succumbed to the weather, while Wrexham earnt a solid 1-3 victory at Barry Town United.
