Wrexham reach play-offs with late show while Salech injury overshadows Cardiff draw: Welsh football weekend round-up

Wrexham produced a remarkable comeback to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 with two goals in stoppage time, climbing into the play-offs.

Elsewhere, Cardiff’s top of the table clash with Stockport County was overshadowed by a nasty looking injury to striker Yousef Salech. Brian Barry-Murphy confirmed after the match that the Danish forward had been taken to hospital, but cleared of a serious injury.

Swansea’s attempt to come from two goals behind at Hull fell short, and Newport picked up a rare victory in their attempt to escape relegation from the football league.

Let’s get into the action!

Wrexham comeback shows why they can make history

QPR had looked assured of victory after Steve Cook’s header had given them the lead in the 80th minute for the second time of the afternoon at Loftus Road.

After a long unbeaten run came to an end last weekend, Wrexham’s chances of a fourth-straight promotion seemed slim.

The West London side looked as though they would have to settle for a point when Josh Windass struck with 93 minutes on the clock. But Rathbone broke Rangers’ hearts when he smashed home in the 95th minute, sending Phil Parkinson’s men sixth in the table.

The Wrexham story has had its fair share of late dramas – and this season has been no different. Only Coventry and Watford have taken more points than Wrexham’s 15 from losing positions, and if they continue to pick up points in games that they have no right to, Phil Parkinson’s men could well make it a record four promotions in four seasons.

“You saw how quickly we got the ball out of the back of the net and got back,” Parkinson noted after Windass’ equaliser. “You can feel it as a team sometimes. We could smell blood.”

“We’ve shown a lot of character over the last four years because – certainly in the last few divisions – we were a target everywhere we went due to the story of Wrexham.

“Every ground was a sell-out so we’ve had to show a strong mentality. We’ve always brought players into the club who’ve got that mentality and we need to keep showing it.”

Salech cleared of ‘serious’ injury after Stockport draw cuts League One lead

Cardiff City striker Yousef Salech was cleared of any ‘serious’ injury after been taken to hospital and given oxygen on the pitch against Stockport County.

The Bluebirds’ top scorer had a hospital scan to determine the severity of his neck injury.

Cardiff issued a statement that read: “We’re pleased to inform supporters that Yousef Salech has been discharged from hospital without any serious injury and will now observe a short period of rest and recovery.”

The 24-year-old was hurt after a challenge by Stockport’s Brad Hills during Saturday’s 1-1 League One draw at Cardiff City Stadium.

Referee Paul Howard did not award a free-kick, seemingly judging Hills to have competed fairly with Salech in an aerial duel. Salech received treatment for 13 minutes before leaving the field on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

“It’s been coming,” Brian Barry-Murphy said. “We’ve seen for months that he hasn’t been protected by the referees.

“It definitely wasn’t nice viewing, but we’re very hopeful [it is not serious]. It’s very difficult when you have such a serious injury to someone who’s so close to all the players.

“It’s difficult to compose yourself and to focus on the game. So really considering those circumstances the players faced, I was over the moon [with their performance] and my own focus to be honest was a little bit distracted.”

Moment of madness from Cabango costs Swans

Swansea were defeated 2-1 by themselves Hull City on the weekend, with former Swan Oli McBurnie opening the scoring with a penalty after Ben Cabango had inexplicably handled Amir Hazdiahmetovic’s free-kick.

Swansea missed two golden chances to level, with Championship leading scorer Zan Vipotnik twice guiding Josh Tymon crosses wide of the far post when he seemed almost certain to find the target.

The Tigers made Swansea pay for their wastefulness when Ronald’s clearance dropped to Regan Slater and he drove home emphatically from outside the area before half-time.

Yet Swansea heads did not drop, and they deservedly pulled a goal back when Liam Cullen met Tymon’s corner with a flicked header which crossed the line before Jay Fulton got a touch at the far post.

Defeat sees Swansea languishing in the bottom half of the Championship, still seven points clear of relegation.

Newport secure vital win over Chesterfield

Newport County moved just one point away from safety with a second home win in a row over play-off chasing Chesterfield.

January loan signing Harrison Biggins opened the scoring for the hosts after the break with his first goal for the Welsh club from a corner.

Michael Spellman doubled County’s lead with his third league goal of the season to put the Exiles in a commanding position for the last 30 minutes.

Chesterfield were unbeaten across their last seven away league games before their trip to Rodney Parade. The visitors gave the Rodney Parade faithful a scare, pulling one back in the 85th minute, but County held on for a vital victory.
