Wrexham Promotion Part Two
Wrexham sit on the edge of history.
If results go their way, the Red Dragons have an opportunity to do something they have never previously achieved in more than 150 years of the club’s history.
After spending 15 years attempting to escape the clutches of the National League and reach League Two, Wrexham are now possibly a win away from an immediate promotion to League One.
If they do so, it will be the first time in their 159-year history that the club has achieved back-to-back promotions.
The Red Dragons have been relegated twice in succession, notably from the Second Division in 1981-82 alongside Cardiff City and whilst the Bluebirds were immediately promoted from the Third Division the following season, Wrexham were relegated once again.
They also won’t be the first club to be promoted from the fifth tier to the third in successive seasons with that feat achieved by 10 other clubs including Crawley, Bristol Rovers and most recently Tranmere in the 17/18, 18/19 seasons.
To achieve their goal this weekend they do need a crucial result to go their way.
Unlike the National League where only one team gains automatic promotion, three teams are promoted from League Two. Currently, Wrexham sit second, five points ahead of fourth placed Milton Keynes Dons with just three games left to play.
On Saturday, Wrexham host bottom of the table Forest Green Rovers at the Racecourse and, simultaneously, Milton Keynes Dons host third place Mansfield.
Therefore, a win for the Red Dragons coupled with MK Dons failing to beat Mansfield would mean the Welsh side will be assured of their place in League One next season.
Of course, it is not essential that Wrexham get the win this weekend to achieve promotion, but with fixtures at fifth placed Crewe Alexandra and a final day clash against top of the table Stockport County to come, this weekend may prove to be their easiest opportunity.
Wrexham drew at Forest Green in late February during a three-game spell without a win but this time they know they have won their last two, including a 4-1 thrashing of Crawley Town last time out.
Rovers on the other hand have had a tough run of games and after Saturday’s game will have played all the current top five in their last five games.
Whilst they have lost three of those, Wrexham know they can’t be taken lightly having stunned Crewe Alexandra with a 3-0 away win on April Fools’ Day and also battled hard last time out despite having to defend for long periods in a 1-0 loss at Mansfield.
Wrexham will once again be looking to star man Paul Mullin for inspiration, with the striker having scored six goals in his last five games and now sits third, just four goals shy of Notts County’s Macaulay Langstaff 25 in the list of the league’s top goalscorers.
Indeed, Saturday’s opponents have no small part to play in Mullin’s upturn in form.
Mullins scored a 93rd minute equaliser from the penalty sport against Forest Green on the 27th of February having previously gone eight and a half hours without a goal, since then, he’s scored a goal every 78 minutes.
With Wrexham yet to lose this calendar year when their talismanic number 10 has scored, here’s hoping ‘Super Paul Mullin’ can come up big once more.
