Wrexham Keep On Winning While Swansea And Cardiff Draw

Rhodri Evans

On a weekend where Wrexham’s convincing victory overshadowed Swansea and Cardiff’s bore draws, Sportin Wales recaps all of that, as well as the south Wales Adran derby and the latest round of Cyrmu Premier action.

Standing Ovation for an unsung hero

Ryan Barnett is not a likely hero. The 25-year-old’s career has already seen him play for five clubs and go on five more loan spells but it seems the right wingback has really found a home at Cae Ras.

Barnett played a key role in all four of Wrexham’s goals in their 4-1 victory over Northampton Town, registering three assists.

His contribution was recognised by the Wrexham faithful, who gave him a standing ovation as he left the pitch with five minutes to go and the result settled.

Captain James McClean scored twice, with Jack Marriott and Elliot Lee also netting as Wrexham bounced back from defeat at Stevenage in style.

Stacey John-Davies’ Goal Wins the derby for Swansea

John-Davies’ opportunist strike was the difference between the two side in the Adran Premier’s south Wales derby, with Swansea beating Cardiff 1-0 in front of over two thousand fans at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The result sees the Swans leapfrog Cardiff into second in the table, behind Briton Ferry Llansawel, who drew 1-1 away at TNS to end their 100% record.

Elsewhere, Wrexham clinched their first league victory of the season as they beat bottom side Aberystwyth Town 3-1 and Barry Town United made it back-to-back victories as they thrashed winless Cardiff Met 5-1.

Cardiff and Bristol Share Severnside Spoils

Luke McNally and Ollie Tanner’s goals meant that the Severnside derby ended in an entertaining draw 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

Tanner’s stunning goal gave the game the lift it needed ten minutes into the second half. The right winger skipped past two defenders and bent the ball into the top corner after Bristol City gave the ball away cheaply.

Cardiff would miss a number of chance to extend their lead and were left to rue those missed chances McNally equalised on 73 minutes.

This result leaves Cardiff sitting bottom of the Championship, but did pulled them up to only three points from safety.

Wasteful Swansea Held To Stalemate By Stoke

Despite a number of chances going the way of the home side, Swansea were unable to beat Stoke on Saturday afternoon, leaving them without a win in three league games.

Eom Ji-sung hit the underside of the crossbar in the first half – the best opportunity among many – before Ronald missed brace of chances after the break.

Swansea needed Lawrence Vigouroux and Ben Cabango to save their point in the end, as the Chilean goalkeeper saved from Tom Cannon and the Welsh defender then cleared a shot off the line with three minutes remaining.

With just eight goals scored from nine games, manager Luke Williams will be spending the international break working with his strikers on their finishing.
