Wrexham hit five as Cardiff hold five – Welsh football weekend round-up

Rhodri Evans
Wrexham came out on top after a barnstorming 5-3 victory over Ipswich Town, further cementing their play-off hopes in the Championship.
Elsewhere, Zan Vipotnik’s goal scoring form continued as he proved to be the difference for Swansea against Bristol City, as Cardiff City suffered a rare defeat at Plymouth Argyle, and Newport lost to promotion chasers Cambridge.
Let’s get into the action.
Wrexham win an eight-goal thriller
After four goals saw the two promotion chasing sides go into the break all square, Wrexham found themselves 3-2 down to Ipswich shortly after halftime.
Weaker teams would fade against a quality side. Not Wrexham.
Crucially, it was a victory – Wrexham’s first at home in the league in 2026 – that lifted the Red Dragons back up to sixth in the Championship table, and one that produced five different goal scorers.
“The magnitude of the effort and the commitment the lads have given us today, if ever there is a game our supporters should be proud of their team, it was today,” Parkinson said.
“We’re pleased with that (returning to the top six). We’ve got a big game on Tuesday and I can’t wait. It’s like I keep saying, we’re just enjoying the ride.
“In this division we’ve played Ipswich three times now, they’re a good side. They’ve got a great manager, a really good side.
“I think if the bookies would have put all the factors together today, Ipswich making 10 changes, the freshness of coming up, they’d have probably been favourites and we’ve overturned that with sheer commitment, honesty and endeavour.”
Wrexham Women win Adran Trophy on penalties
The weekend of Wrexham fans’ dreams did not stop there as the women’s side won the Adran Trophy for the first time, beating Cardiff City on penalties in Sunday’s final.
The Red Dragons came from behind against Cardiff City to level 2-2 and force penalties in the final at Bangor City Stadium.
And when cool heads were needed, it was Wrexham who converted four spot-kicks while goalkeeper Liz Craven saved Cardiff’s first two efforts to clinch a 4-2 win in the shootout.
The league rivals will meet again in the Adran Premier in just six days, while they will also compete for a place in the Welsh Cup final next month.

Zan the man wins the day for the Swans again
The Championship’s top scorer Zan Vipotnik was the toast of Swansea once again as his 16th league goal of the season proved to be the difference between the Welsh side at Bristol City.
The Swans are now eight unbeaten at home, a run that has seen them rise into the top half of the Championship and only six points off the play-off places with 13 matches to go in the league season.
“I think the fans today were unbelievable,” Vitor Matos, the Swansea head coach said.
“That connection is massive. The last 15 minutes, [the fans] played the game with us, they tackled the Bristol players with us, they created the counters with us.
“When you have that feeling, the players can feel it. They feel they can compete against anyone and when you create that feeling in the stadium, it is outstanding.”

Cardiff capitulate in Plymouth thrashing
Cardiff City boss Brian Barry-Murphy has urged for calm from his side as they suffered a 5-2 defeat at Plymouth on Saturday.
The Bluebirds were beaten 5-2 at Home Park on Saturday, their first loss of 2026 after a run of 12 games unbeaten.
It was an eventful game, with Argyle leading 3-2 at half-time before eventually making sure of victory after the break, despite having as little as 25% possession at times.
With Lincoln City winning later in the day, Cardiff’s lead at the top of League One has been cut to just one point.
“It’s a very disappointing result for us, naturally, but we have to take it on the chin,” said Barry-Murphy.
“We controlled the game in the early exchanges, but we weren’t at our best and, when Plymouth broke, they looked dangerous.
“We needed to be better. Our mindset was to push forward at all times but when the penalty came it was difficult for the players. No issue with the players’ attitude whatsoever.
“Well done to Plymouth and good luck to them. They’re a powerful team and put the ball into forward areas very quickly. They scored from two breakaways when we looked like scoring. We didn’t deal with that well enough and that’s ultimately what cost us the game.”
Newport downed by late double
County looked on the way to seeing out a creditable home draw with promotion favourites Cambridge United before the Us scored late twice to leave the Exiles rooted to the bottom of the football league.
It is not the first time this season that County have conceded in quick succession having fallen behind.
“We were in the game, there was just a period of five minutes that it got away from us,” Newport assistant manager Mark Smith told BBC Sport Wales.
“When we go down a goal we cannot let it affect us so much, that’s the third time since we’ve been here that it has happened.
“I think they just felt sorry for themselves at that point, when we make errors we go into our shell, we need more people to say there is plenty of time to put things right.”
