Wrexham further cement play-off place as Newport show signs of life: Welsh football weekend round-up

A 0-1 victory for Wrexham over Charlton saw them go four points clear of closest rivals Southampton in the Championship play-off race.

Elsewhere, Newport’s 0-0 draw with Fleetwood saw them take a small step towards safety, while Cardiff won and Swansea lost.

Let’s get into the action!

Wrexham’s resilience is taking them to the Premier League

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson praised his side’s ability to get difficult results as they beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at The Valley.

Ollie Rathbone’s volley means Wrexham remain in the play-off positions with a four-point advantage over Southampton in seventh spot.

But Parkinson – whose side have collected more points than anyone in the second-tier since Christmas Day – knows not every win comes gift-wrapped.

“It was always going to be a hard game because Nathan’s teams give everything and they’re fighting for points,” Parkinson said.

“But we showed incredible resilience to get the win. We came under a bit of pressure but the way we defended the box today was exceptional and it was important we saw it through.

“Good sides find ways to win games, that’s what they’ve done – and they are a good side. You don’t win the games they have in a four-year period if you are not.

“At times they have to ride your luck and it’s up you to punish them – we didn’t and that was the difference. They have individuals that can win games and they find ways to do that.”

Newport frustrate Fleetwood to take a step towards safety

County took a – small – step towards safety with a 0-0 draw at Fleetwood Town in what manager Christian Fuchs described as a ‘cup game’ beforehand.

The relegation-threatened side’s goal was under siege for the most part, but they held on to take home a precious point.

The hosts were well on top in the first half with 73% possession and 16 shots to Newport’s two and goalkeeper Jordan Wright was called into action early in the second period to deny Evans.

Wright saved again from Mark Helm to cap a fine individual performance and help Newport hold on for a draw.

With fellow relegation strugglers Harrogate Town also picking up a point, but Crawley and Barrow losing, the result leaves Newport bottom of the table but brings them a point closer to escaping relegation.

Cardiff put wobble talk to bed

Cardiff bounced back in style with the memory of a potentially damaging defeat to Plymouth put to bed in a 4-0 thrashing of Doncaster Rovers.

Having controlled proceedings from the outset, Cardiff were rewarded on 26 minutes as Dylan Lawlor’s sumptuous delivery found Alex Robertson who took the ball on his chest before coolly netting his fourth goal of the campaign.

The central midfielder’s strike ensured Brian Barry-Murphy’s side have scored in 22 successive league games.

Cardiff doubled their lead in sublime style shortly after the restart as Lawlor ran from his own half, evading multiple challenges in doing so, before drilling a low effort into the bottom corner.

Cian Ashford and Callum Robinson added the gloss to the scoreline as the Bluebirds remain top of League One by a point over Lincoln.

Swansea soundly beaten by Ipswich

Swansea manager Vitor Matos has urged his side to learn from their 3-0 defeat to Ipswich.

Anis Mehmeti, Ivan Azon and George Hirst struck as Swansea suffered the heaviest loss of Matos’ time in charge.

“When you lose, you need always to learn,” Matos said.

“It’s important to learn what we can improve. Sometimes it’s more important what you get out of a defeat than when you win.

“Ipswich are in the top spots in the league. We saw the reasons why and that’s what we need to find ourselves when we need to compete against these teams.”
