Wrexham conquer early invincibles and Swans sweat on Vipotnik: Welsh football weekend round-up

Wrexham put their League Cup disappointment behind them, beating early Championship frontrunners Coventry on Saturday, as Swansea earnt a point at Charlton on an intriguing weekend of Championship action.

With Cardiff and Newport in FA Cup action this weekend, we’ve split the round-up into two. You can find our thoughts on the FA Cup action here.

Kieffer’s perfect hattrick on a perfect Wrexham day

Wales striker Kieffer Moore kick started the Wrexham season in earnest against Coventry on the weekend, scoring a perfect hattrick to hand Frank Lampard’s side their first defeat of the campaign.

Moore netted three times in 23 second half minutes for Wrexham, who came back after Ephron Mason-Clark gave the visitors the advantage at the break.

Wrexham rallied though, through their strike partnership of Moore and Josh Windass – who assisted all three goals.

Victory lifted Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham – who have secured back-to-back home league wins for the first time this season – up to 11th in the table.

Parkinson rotated a number of his squad after their League Cup disappointment against Welsh rivals Cardiff and it paid off, with wingbacks Issa Kabore and Liberato Cacace impressing down the flanks.

While the north Walian side’s form remains inconsistent, they now find themselves in the top half of the Championship and looking upwards, rather than down.

Vipotnik injury dominants bore draw for Swans

Swansea fought back to earn a point at Charlton, but the main talking point from the match was the absence of striker Zan Vipotnik through injury.

The Slovenia international has scored six Championship goals in 11 appearances this season, marking him out as one of the better strikers in the division, but former Celtic striker Adam Idah started in his place at The Valley.

Idah’s goal was his first open-play goal for Swansea and the next few weeks may be a chance for him to start paying back his £6m transfer fee.

While Alan Sheehan was undoubtedly pleased to see Idah scoring on his first chance to impress in the Championship, the worry will remain over the extent of Vipotnik’s injury.

“Vipi (Vipotnik) felt something in his quad so we are going to get that looked at,” said Swansea head coach Alan Sheehan.

“We didn’t want to risk it – we don’t know how serious it is. We are going to have to get a scan and see where it is.”
