Wrexham are set to add to their summer business with the imminent signing of Preston North End skipper Ben Whiteman, after the midfielder underwent a medical with the Red Dragons on Tuesday.

The 200-times Championship veteran looks set to become Wrexham’s second signing of the window, following full-back Danny Imray’s arrival from Crystal Palace.

The move hasn’t gone down well at Deepdale, however, with Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom accusing the 30-year-old of forcing his way out of the club.

Heckingbottom believes Whiteman overstepped the mark by informing club officials he’d played his last game for North End.

“Ben knew there was a line I didn’t want him to cross and unfortunately he has,” Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“There’s a valuation on him, I just hope for Ben’s sake that Wrexham are willing to pay it otherwise he’s put himself in a sticky situation.

“He’s made his bed. I’m not bothered as long as I get another player.”

A Manchester United academy graduate, Whiteman made 43 Championship appearances for Preston last term as they finished 14th.

Born in Rochdale, he came through the ranks at Sheffield United, making his senior bow in 2014 before loan spells at Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers sharpened his experience.

He made the move to Doncaster permanent in 2018, went on to captain the club, and stayed until 2021, when he sealed his switch to Preston.

The Whiteman deal comes as Wrexham midfielder George Dobson is being tipped for a possible move to League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday.
