Wrexham beat Swans, Newport climb out of relegation zone, and Cardiff back on track: Welsh football weekend round-up

Rhodri Evans
It was a busy weekend for the Welsh sides in the English Football League, with Wrexham beating Swansea on Friday night, Newport County climbed out of the relegation zone, and Cardiff got back on track at Exeter.
Let’s get into the action!
Wrexham fairytale continues as Rob and Ryan make commentary debut
Wrexham won the Welsh derby on Friday night, thanks to goals from Nathan Broadhead and Callum Doyle, further cementing their chances of a spot in the play-offs come the end of the season.
Broadhead continued his fine form – coming at the right time as Wales play their World Cup play-off semi-final next week – with the opening goal, saying that he is ‘proud’ to be at the club.
“It just shows where the club’s going. I’m proud to be here,” he said.
“I think winning every game and getting Wrexham into the Premier League would be amazing, but it’s just the process really that I’m enjoying.”
In a bizarre turn – and one that will have no doubt annoyed any Swansea fans watching Friday night’s coverage – Wrexham’s ownership duo of Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds took to co-commentary with Sky Sports.
They admitted to FaceTiming famous celebrities – including David Beckham during their recent FA Cup defeat to Chelsea – proving throughout the coverage that they really have become the ultimate marmite football owners of the current moment.

Newport win late to climb out of relegation zone
James Crole scored his first ever football league goal as Newport beat play-off chasing Barnet to climb out of the League Two relegation zone.
The result lifted Christian Fuchs’ side into 21st and two points above the relegation zone.
Former Penybont striker Crole, 22, joined County in January, along with winger Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, who set up his goal at Hive Stadium.
“I’m relieved in all honesty because I haven’t done as well as I would have liked in my first few games,” said Crole.
“Today (Saturday) I came on and made an impact, I was a nuisance, I obviously got my goal which is what I’m here to do. I’ve dreamed about the moment 100 times and it couldn’t have really got much better, in front of the fans.
“I’m hoping now I can kick on and take some momentum into the next couple of games and do well for the rest of the season.”
County have nine games left to secure their football league status for another season, starting with the visit of leaders Bromley to Rodney Parade on Tuesday.

Cardiff return to winning ways at Exeter
Rubin Colwill scored twice in the first half as Cardiff thrashed Exeter City 4-0 at St James Park to reaffirm their promotion candidacy.
Alex Robertson and Callum Robinson added the icing and the cherry on the cake for the Bluebirds, after what was a disappointing week for Brain Barry-Murphy’s side.
Cardiff ended the day four points adrift of Lincoln at the top of League One, but 11 points clear of third-place Bolton Wanderers.
“I’m really just so grateful for the players that they remained so focused on playing our way, the Cardiff City way, and I suppose not showing any signs of going away from that in spite of what can be disappointing,” Barry-Murphy said.
“I’m so grateful for the players and the mentality and character that they show every single day. We trained brilliantly on Thursday after a long trip back from Barnsley.
“All the feelings were right and you can’t count how you’re going to come here and win.
“All these games are very difficult and Exeter has always been a tough ground for away teams. But today we were really worthy winners.”
