Wrexham at Posh and Cardiff host Boro: Welsh Football Weekend Preview
Rhodri Evans
As Wrexham prepare to travel to Peterborough for their next League One fixture, Sportin Wales previews a Welsh football weekend that includes a tough trip for Swansea, a chance for Cardiff to build some momentum, and Newport at the Shrimps!
West Brom host Swansea
While it is perhaps unfair to say that Swansea threw away the South Wales derby last Sunday, they were 1-0 up with less than 15 minutes of regular time left and contrived to draw the match.
The home side had a number of chances in the first half and really should have been two or three goals up before Cardiff rallied in the second period.
A shock 1-0 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the League Cup has put a real dampener on what was proving to be a good start to the season for Luke Williams’ side.
With the boost that they will be part of Craig Bellamy’s first Wales squad, attacking duo Ollie Cooper and Liam Cullen will be out to prove that they deserve the chance to prove their quality from the start against Türkiye and Montenegro next week.
Colwill can kick on from Southampton wonder strike
While the derby draw did not lift Cardiff off the bottom of the Championship table, that result, coupled with their spirited 3-5 defeat to Premier League Southampton will at least give some confidence to a squad that badly needs it.
Saints manager Russell Martin was full of praise for Rubin Colwill, whose wonder strike made the score 1-1 in the first half.
Colwill has been a bit-part player under Erol Bulut in the last year and will be looking to put a run of games together in blue.
Wrexham’s juggernaut rolls into the Posh
10 goals scored and four conceded from four games so far this season. As the Wrexham train stops in Peterborough for the weekend, many a fan of the Town will be keeping an eye on their league position – fourth – even at this early stage of the season.
Peterborough represent a tough test for Wrexham, having won two of their three game so far this season. Their manager is a familiar name: Darren Ferguson, who played and captained Wrexham between 1999 and 2007.
If Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott, Steven Fletcher, Sam Dalby, and Jack Bickerstaff were not enough options up front, Wrexham have signed West Brom striker Mo Faal for a reported £500,000.
Expect some outgoings before the transfer deadline this evening.
County visit lowly Morecombe
Newport visit the North West coast on Saturday afternoon as they take on Morecombe, who find themselves at the foot of the Football League.
A trio of 1-0 defeats, coupled with a 3-0 first round defeat to Huddersfield in the first round of the League Cup means that the Shrimpers are yet to score this season.
County, on the other hand, are full of goals under Nelson Jardim. Back-to-back 3-1 wins in recent weeks have lifted them into the play-off places.
Newport are yet to keep a clean sheet this season so one record will have to be broken at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Saturday.
TNS success lifts Cymru Premier
The New Saints’ European exploits have been well documented, and is also a great boost for the league as a whole.
This practically means that their will be 4 European places in the league for next season, as well as a coefficient boost for the league as a whole.
The profile of the league is likely to increase, as will TNS’ footballing .level – not necessarily a good thing for the rest of the Prem!
As TNS wait to find out if they are set to travel to Chelsea or Fiorentina, Real Betis or Copenhagen, the rest of the Cymru Premier will be in round five action.
