Welsh Runners And Riders For Grand National

“There’s a good chance, in the Grand National, for a Welsh horse to win.”

Those are the words of DragonBet’s very own James Lovell talking us through the chances of the Welsh runners and riders for Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree.

The main contender out of the Welsh horses is Kitty’s Light, a small horse that Lovell thinks has “the best chance of all the British runners, outside of the favourite Corach Rambler.”

The line-up, reduced from 40 horses to 34 due to safety reasons, is dominated by Irish horses but Kitty’s Light is priced at a promising 11/1 on DragonBet.

Speaking to the Sportin Wales Podcast this week, Lovell spoke about how the Ogmore Beach-trained horse “barely cost a thing.”

“He’s trained in Ogmore, on the sands a bit like where Red Rum used to be trained,” he said.

“He has a lovely story behind him, Christian [Williams], who is the trainer, his child has been ill and the horse has given the whole family and yard a massive lift.”

Betsy, Williams’ six-year-old daughter, was diagnosed with leukaemia last year.

“It’ll be a financial disaster for us as bookmakers if Kitty’s Lynn wins but some things mean more than money,” said Lovell.

“This would be a result that we’d happily pay through the nose to see.

“He’s already won the Scottish Grand National, ran a big race at Sandown, so I’ll be going to petition the Senedd for a national holiday if he wins!

“Only a little horse, that barely cost anything. He’s a flat horse and he’s ended up being a super, super jumps horse.

“He’s tiny, he doesn’t jump over the fences, he jumps through them. He’s a lunatic!”

As well as Kitty’s Light, there are two other Welsh horses running on Saturday: Nassalam and Mac Tottie.

Nassalam, priced at 25/1 on DragonBets, is the reigning Welsh Grand National champion.

With a “very shrewd” trainer in Gary Moore and an experienced jockey in Caoilin Quinn, Nassalam is a runner that, unlike most, relishes soft ground, and with the recent rain, Aintree will be soft going.

Nassalam finished down the field in its prep run at the Gold Cup and Lovell stressed that, as far as which horse to pick for a punter, “markets support Nassalam.”

The third and final Welsh horse running on Saturday is Mac Tottie, priced at 50/1 on DragonBets.

Trained in West Wales by Peter Bowen, the 11-year-old will be ridden by Peter’s son, James.

He has had plenty of success at Aintree over the years, winning in the Topham in 2022 and the Grand Sefton in 2021.
