Welsh Rugby Union brands imminent EGM as ‘short-sighted’

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has branded the call for an extraordinary general meeting as ‘short-sighted’ and warns of potential ‘damage’ to the game in Wales.
The WRU issued a statement on Friday in response to a growing number of clubs in the Central Glamorgan Rugby Union – within the Ospreys region – calling for an EGM where three motions are being put forward.
The first is a vote of no confidence in WRU chair Collier-Keywood and PRB chair Wall, which would require a majority of more than 50% to pass.
The second motion would be for the WRU council to hold elections for the four elected member board position within 14 days after the EGM, which also requires more than 50% of the vote.
The third motion is to amend how the WRU district and council members are elected, which will require a 75% majority.
Around 30 of the 283 clubs in Wales are required to support the plans, and it has been reported that Central Glamorgan are confident of reaching that target.
Union president Terry Cobner, chairman Richard Collier-Keywood and chief executive Abi Tierney have written to all member clubs.
“Welsh rugby is at a critical moment,” they said in a joint statement on Friday.
“This is not the moment to gamble with Welsh rugby’s future with the short-sighted and debilitating motions that have been presented.
“We have a plan. It was shaped by you. It is published. Let’s deliver it together.”
If the motion meets the required threshold, the governing body must call the EGM within 21 days. However at least 93 clubs will be needed to attend on the day to ensure the meeting is valid.
The Union state in response to the proposed motions that they would ‘reverse hard-won progress, stall vital investment, and joepardise the prosperity of Welsh rugby at every level.’
They add: “The WRU has already delivered a clear, costed, plan backed unanimously by the Board and shaped by the most extensive consultation in Welsh sport. That plan is underway. Every week of uncertainty damages progress.”
