Welsh Rugby Icon Mike Phillips returns for fourth annual golf day to support Prostate Cymru
Former Welsh international rugby star Mike Phillips has officially announced the return of his high-profile charity golf day for 2026.
Now in its fourth consecutive year, the event has become a landmark fixture for men’s health awareness. Hosted at the renowned Derllys Court Golf Club in Carmarthen, the tournament continues to serve as a vital fundraising engine for Prostate Cymru, the leading prostate health charity in Wales.
Since launching the initiative, Mike Phillips has been a driving force in rallying the Welsh sporting community to address a critical health statistic: 1 in 8 men in Wales will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with 1 in 5 in Wales being diagnosed too late for a cure.
To date, the collective efforts surrounding this annual event have raised over £85,000, providing essential funding for life-saving equipment and regional support services.
The event has built a reputation for attracting a stellar lineup of sporting celebrities who share a commitment to the cause. In previous years, the fairways have played host to stars such as world champion snooker player Mark Williams, darts sensation Johnny Clayton, and rugby internationals Rhys Priestland and Andy Powell.
Beyond the competition on the green, the day offers a full schedule of entertainment and high-stakes incentives. Participants will be treated to a performance by the acclaimed singer Dafydd Evans, and the excitement is heightened by the inclusion of a spectacular hole-in-one prize, with the chance to win a brand-new car or caravan for a perfect shot on a designated par three.
The 2026 golf day comes at a pivotal moment as Prostate Cymru has launched its PSA Testing Days for the 2nd year running. With no national screening programme currently active in Wales, the charity relies on the visibility of ambassadors like Mike to reach men who may be at risk.
The funds raised at Derllys Court are instrumental in maintaining the charity’s mobile awareness units and ensuring Welsh patients have access to world-class care.
“Early detection is key to saving lives, as many men find out they have prostate cancer by complete chance, often when it is too late to treat effectively,” Tina Tew, Chief Executive of Prostate Cymru, said.
“While the disease is more common in older men, the risk increases for men over 50 or those with a family history of prostate cancer.
“Prostate cancer is not exclusive to older men, and men aged 45 with a family history of the disease are also at higher risk. Unfortunately, there is no national screening program for prostate cancer, but a simple PSA test, which measures prostate-specific antigen levels in the blood, is available.
“Prostate Cymru encourages men with concerns about their health to consult their GP or practice nurse about the test. The charity also offers support through its specialist nurse, available Monday to Friday from 4pm-8pm on 08000 470 200. With Phillips’ golf day continuing to raise funds and awareness, Prostate Cymru’s work remains more critical than ever.”
