Wales vs England: What to Expect from the Lionesses
Wales vs England. Red Dragons vs Lionesses. Wal Goch y Menywod vs England away.
However you spin it, Sunday’s clash in Group D is a massive match for both rivals.
Having bounced back from defeat against France to thrash the Netherlands, England will need a result against Wales in the final group game to qualify for the quarterfinals.
For Wales, they’re looking to spoil the party. Drawn in a group of death, Rhian Wilkinson’s side lost to both the Netherlands and France this week.
But what can Wales expect when they face England on Sunday in St. Gallen?
England
World Ranking: 4th
Fixture: Sunday 13th, KO 20:00
Previous matches in Group D: 1–2 vs France, 4–0 vs Netherlands
Head Coach: Sarina Wiegman
Wiegman is the best coach at the EUROs this summer. A back-to-back winner of the competition, firstly with her native Netherlands in 2017 and then with England in 2022, she is a rigid tactician.
Her record at recent World Cups is similar, having lost the 2019 and 2023 finals with the Netherlands and England to the United States and Spain, respectively.
Wiegman is an honest communicator, which can cause issues when dealing with such a talented squad, where leaving experience on the bench is often necessary. The build-up to this tournament was blighted by the retirements of Fran Kirby and Mary Earps, as well as Millie Bright asking not to be considered for selection.
With over 200 caps lost on the eve of the tournament, talented but young options like Hannah Hampton, Maya Le Tissier, and Michelle Agyemang will be asked to step up at different points.
Record in 2025: W4, D1, L2
England have had an up-and-down 2025 so far, with a win and a loss to Spain in the Nations League as the headline results. Their 3–2 defeat to Belgium in Leuven was a low point, but a 7–0 warm-up victory over Jamaica has restored confidence in a lethal frontline of Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, and Lauren James.
If England play to their potential and top the group, then a semi-final clash with Spain could be the game of the tournament.
Star Player: Lauren Hemp
Hemp has been around for so long that her quality is sometimes taken for granted. With her namesake James playing in the number 10 role, the Manchester City forward remains England’s best winger and most potent creative threat.
She missed much of the 2024/25 domestic season due to a knee injury, but when fit and firing, the 24-year-old is arguably the best winger at the EUROs.
One to Watch: Hannah Hampton
It’s unusual to pick a goalkeeper as ‘one to watch,’ but with Earps now gone, Hampton has the opportunity to cement her place in the England team for the next decade.
In the post-Earps era, Hampton is indispensable as England’s No. 1, with the options behind her, Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse, having zero caps between them. One way or another, the spotlight will be on Hampton, and she could end up being England’s most important player at the age of 24.
