Wales and Pakistan served up a thrilling 3-3 draw in Pool D of the Hockey World Cup in Amsterdam, with both sides trading the lead throughout an entertaining contest.

Pakistan made the brighter start, Abdul Rehman opening the scoring inside three minutes with some brilliant aerial work along the baseline.

Wales hit back in style

Wales responded strongly in the second quarter, making the most of a spell with Pakistan’s Sufyan Khan in the sin bin.

Gareth Furlong powered home a penalty corner, and Rhys Bradshaw added a second just 30 seconds later to turn the game on its head.

The lead didn’t last, though.

Khan returned from his yellow card to level matters with a penalty corner in the fourth quarter, before a deflection off Hannan Shahid nudged Pakistan back in front.

Wales were not finished, though, as Furlong kept his cool from the penalty spot to net his second of the match and make it 3-3.

Both sides still in the hunt

The draw leaves Wales and Pakistan level on one point apiece after two games in Pool D, with both still in the running for a second-round berth.

Wales were beaten 3-1 by India on Saturday, while Pakistan lost 4-1 to England in their tournament opener.

Wales now turn their attention to world number three side England, who they face in their final pool match on Wednesday at 11:30am.

As with much of the squad, the programme remains largely amateur – many players juggle full-time jobs or study alongside international duty, and are responsible for funding their own travel to represent their country.

There was a personal landmark for Wales too, with Rhodri Furlong winning his 100th cap during the match.
