Wales international Nel Metcalfe has signed a new contract at Professional Women’s Rugby club Gloucester-Hartpury.

Metcalfe graduated through the Hartpury College and University system and has signed terms to stay with the PWR club for the 2026/27 season.

The 21-year-old first joined Gloucester Hartpury in 2024 after impressing in the Celtic Challenge with Gwalia Lightning, building on a rapid progression through the Welsh domestic and international pathway.

She previously played club rugby with Nant Conwy RFC until 2023 and earned her first senior Wales cap at just 18 during the inaugural 2023 WXV competition, debuting against the United States before making her first start against New Zealand.

Since then, Metcalfe has continued to establish herself at international level, featuring in the Wales U20 Six Nations Summer Series before becoming a regular in the senior squad for the 2025 Women’s Six Nations.

With experience across WXV, Six Nations and Premiership Women’s Rugby, Metcalfe has now earned 16 Wales caps and was selected in the 2025 Rugby World Cup squad.

“Nel’s understanding of the game and ability to break teams down has really grown since joining us, and she’s shown she has a genuine try-scoring threat from anywhere across the back three,” Gloucester-Hartpury Head of Rugby, Dan Murphy said.

“She’s becoming an increasingly dangerous player at this level, and what’s most exciting is that there’s still plenty of growth ahead of her.

“Even while she’s currently working through injury rehab, we’re really pleased with the direction she’s heading and are looking forward to seeing her back on the pitch doing what she does best.”

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far and feel like I’m growing a lot as a player in this environment,” Metcalfe added.

“Right now, I’m focusing fully on my rehab and doing everything I can to get back to full fitness.

“I’m looking forward to being back out there once I’ve completed that process and feeling ready to contribute again. The standards here are really high and that’s exactly what I need at this stage of my career.

“I’m excited to keep building on that and see where it takes me.”
