Wales head to Kobe in search of redemption
By guest columnist, Peter Ryan
Wales head to Kobe this Saturday with steely determination, carrying the weight of their recent defeat to Japan. Eager to break their 18-game losing streak—and with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon—every match is crucial. The Welsh team is resolute in its mission to bounce back before returning home. The outcome of this match is of paramount importance. For Matt Sherratt, victory is not just a goal; it’s a necessity.
Last Time Out
There was high anticipation heading into this tour. The trip to Japan provided a prime opportunity to secure a much-needed win. Wales haven’t tasted victory since the 2023 World Cup, and many expected them to match up well against Japan. For a time, they did just that. Scores from Ben Thomas and Tom Rogers, along with a penalty try, put the visitors in front. At halftime, it was 19–7, with Takuro Matsunaga scoring an electrifying try for Japan.
But the second half is where Wales faltered. After a cagey 20 minutes, the conditions began to take their toll. Japan showed a ruthless pursuit of victory, while Wales dwindled. Tries from Ichigo Nakakusu and Halatoa Vailea sealed a big win for the hosts. Now, Wales will look to right the wrongs this Saturday.
Victory Is a Must
Wales are a blend of grit and guile, fully capable of delivering a win. They’re focusing on improving their set pieces, boasting a 79% lineout win rate and an 88% scrum win rate—compared to Japan’s 87% and 100%, respectively. The team must also work on gaining more control through the half-backs to manage the challenging conditions.
Despite the sting of the previous result, Wales dominated the breakdown, securing 14 turnovers to Japan’s one. The team has all the tools needed to win; now, it’s all about execution.
The Teams
Wales have made four changes to the starting XV, introducing Freddie Thomas, Archie Griffin, Aaron Wainwright, and Dan Edwards. Christian Coleman, Taine Plumtree, Reuben Morgan-Williams, and Keelan Giles are ready to make an impact from the bench.
There’s strong competition for places within the squad, with each player eager to seize their moment. Keep an eye on Dan Edwards, whose outstanding form at Ospreys could make a big impression in the famous red jersey. Taine Plumtree is also expected to bring his red-hot Scarlets form into the international arena.
Japan have also named their side. While inexperience may linger, the squad is packed with raw talent waiting to ignite. Toulouse scrum-half Naito Sato joins the lineup, along with Keijiro Tamefusa and Faulua Makisi. Captain Michael Leitch will, as always, look to lead by example. Dylan Riley is a classy operator who could pose a serious threat to the Welsh backline.
Riding high from last week’s triumph, Japan are now eyeing back-to-back wins—an outcome that would send a clear message under Eddie Jones’ watch.
