Wales goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel has sealed a season-long loan move to Watford from Manchester United, returning to a club she previously represented on loan during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

The 21-year-old is now set to embark on a full season with the Hornets in Women’s Super League 2, having impressed during her earlier stint in Hertfordshire.

Middleton-Patel made her senior debut for the Red Devils against Newcastle United back in December 2024, and went on to make three appearances under Marc Skinner last season – among them a memorable Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.

Confirming the move, a Manchester United statement read: “We will be tracking Saf’s progress closely and wish her the very best of luck.”

The Wales number one has also had previous loan spells away from Old Trafford with Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City and Coventry United, gaining valuable senior experience along the way.

On the international stage, she started five of Wales’ six World Cup qualifying group stage matches earlier this year.

Middleton-Patel will now be aiming to hold onto her place between the sticks for Rhian Wilkinson’s side as Wales prepare to face Albania in a play-off first-round double header in October.

Victory in that tie would set up a second-round meeting with either Romania or Norway, as Wales continue their pursuit of a place at the World Cup.
