Wales and Lions scrumhalf Tomos Williams wins Premiership player of the season

Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams has been named Premiership Player of the Season after an excellent first campaign with Gloucester.

Williams, 30, joined Gloucester from Cardiff Rugby last summer and his form in cherry and white has been standout throughout the campaign.

Gloucester finished fifth in the English Premiership, missing out on the play-off by just two points, while Williams himself scored nine tries – the sixth most in the division.

The 65-cap Wales international also made 26 clean breaks, and passed the ball over 1000 times, 156 more than the distant second placed player – Harry Randall.

Such was Williams’ form, he was selected as part of the British and Irish Lions squad for this summer’s tour of Australia, in spite of Wales’ poor recent form.

“I didn’t know what to expect from this season; I came in open-minded and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Williams.

“I couldn’t have picked a better club than Gloucester, and better coaches, they have been class.”

“It was the style of play that appealed. That has shown through the season, they give us the freedom to play and express ourselves and I think that has benefited me and the boys.”
