Leeds United have announced that Wales international and club captain Ethan Ampadu has signed a new four-year deal with the club.

Ampadu was recently in action for Wales in their 1-1 friendly draw with Ghana on Tuesday.

The new contract comes as a reward for the 25-year-old’s efforts in a successful season for Leeds, who survived relegation having been promoted from the Championship last campaign.

Ampadu has been an influential figure in West Yorkshire both on and off the pitch since his arrival from Chelsea ahead of the 2023/24 season, when he was the first signing of the club’s new ownership regime.

The midfielder won the club’s player for the year award in his first season and was appointed club captain in 2024.

Last term, Ampadu shone on Leeds’ return to the Premier League, making 35 appearances in the heart of midfield and scoring once, in the 4-1 home victory over Crystal Palace.

Having guided his club to safety, he again picked up the club’s player of the season award, alongside the players’ player of the year award.

For Wales, Ampadu has been a key part of the squad for a number of years, and his role has only become more important since the appointment of Craig Bellamy as head coach.

He won his 62nd international cap against Ghana and has captained the side regularly in the absence of Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies.

“It is very exciting times and very pleased to have it sorted and out of the way,” Ampadu said, speaking to the club’s website after signing the new deal.

“And now we can concentrate on hopefully building on what has been, especially the last two years, something very positive.

“We obviously knew that starting from the Championship the aim was to get promoted.

“We always had the ambition that we were going to achieve that. So, to have the second year and become champions and enjoy that with the whole city was amazing.

“And then especially last year, to be one of the teams to stay up for the first couple of seasons was massive. That was the target.”

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds about the new deal for the club captain, club chairman Paraag Marathe said: “It is great to have our captain locked up and here.

“He represents everything we want on and off the pitch and I think it’s a great signal to the market, in advance to the transfer window as well, about what we’re about as a club.”
