Wales head coach described his side’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Romania as “disappointing” as Wales’ wait for an away friendly win went on.

At the Stadionul Steaua, Bellamy’s side went behind to Florinel Coman, while David Brooks’ volley brought Wales level in the second half.

However, Adrian Rus netted the winner with 10 minutes to go after a smart short corner routine led to the centre half flicking a header beyond the diving Danny Ward.

The result means that Wales are yet to win an away friendly since their 1-0 victory over Denmark in 2008.

Bellamy scored the winner that day in Brondby, but cut a more frustrated figure 18 years later.

“Disappointing,” Bellamy said in his post-match press conference.

“There were some good bits, but there were some negatives as well. We need to be better.

“I felt we didn’t create the opportunity enough to get into the final third and create consistent chances. We had one or two exceptional chances of course, but we were in too much build-up deep, and that’s not what we look for.

“We want to break lines and be attacking the defence on a regular basis. I just thought we were slow moving the ball at times which didn’t help us, so I’m disappointed.”

The result means that Wales are winless in 2026, with their last victory coming in November – a 7-1 thrashing of North Macedonia.

If that match looked like the start of Bellamy’s Wales hitting something approaching top gear, the defeats to Bosnia and Romania this year have represented how far his side have to go.

“We were not good enough, not at all,” goal scorer Brooks said.

“We need to watch it back and try and take some positives out of it. We kept the ball quite nicely, but we lacked penetrating passes.

“We played in the wrong areas. We need to be miles better in the Nations League and in the next camp.”
