Established: Thornhill AFC are a well-known football club around Cardiff. The U12 girls team came together in 2019 as a joint under 9 / under 10’s team.

About: Our team was formed in 2019 following a series of FAW huddle sessions. We had 3 girls at our first training session but we have grown and now have a squad of 17. We have girls playing for us who are based all over Cardiff.

Thornhill AFC have a thriving girls section that goes right through the age groups and compete in the South Wales Women’s and Girls Football League.

Why they’re special: There is a real sense of belonging within the team, they are very supportive of each other and bring a lot of joy to the football they play. They are a happy group even when the rain is coming down sideways.

Any big wins: Until now all our games have been non-competitive so the focus has been on improving skills and technique rather than results. Our most recent game was probably the best we have played. The girls were excellent.

What’s the team really proud of: I’m going to shift this slightly and say what the coaches are most proud of. We are really proud that the girls come and enjoy playing football. That they play to win but they are fair and treat their opponents with respect.

We have a great sense of community within the team, our parents are very supportive and this makes for an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

What’s next: In the second half of this season we will be placed into a competitive league and will be competing for the league and in a cup competition.
