Tons for Northeast, Ingram as Glamorgan battle for Leicestershire draw

Rhodri Evans
Experienced batters Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram both scored day four hundreds as the pair guided Glamorgan to a draw against league leaders Leicestershire.
Northeast and Ingram put together a partnership of 225, a fourth-wicket record for Glamorgan against the Foxes. Captain Northeast, who made 410 not out on this ground three years ago, now holds three different wicket record partnerships for Glamorgan against Leicestershire.
Leicestershire remain well clear at the top of the second division after taking 16 points from the game, with Glamorgan taking 13 points and remaining third in the table, thanks to another draw between Gloucestershire and Derbyshire.
Resuming on 131-3 but still 92 behind, Glamorgan’s middle order batted with calm assurance on a flat wicket.
Ingram, 37 not out overnight, went to his half-century off 121 deliveries, Northeast reaching his century off 186 deliveries, 11 of which he hit to the boundary.
With the Kookaburra ball – being used for the first time this season in the Championship – going soft quickly, the key moment was always likely to be the new ball coming five overs after lunch with Glamorgan still four runs behind.
The pitch stayed fairly flat throughout the contest in Leicester, with university student opener Asa Tribe hitting his maiden first class hundred on day one, and Glamorgan ranking up 353 all out with further contributions from Kiran Carlson, Ingram, Zain-ul-Hassan, and Chris Cooke.
Leicestershire, who have won five of the their eight matches this season – at least two more than another other side this season – were dominant in reply.
Rishi Patel and Sol Budinger put on 180 for the first wicket at almost a run a ball, with Rehan Ahmed hitting his third ton of the season at three to compound the Glamorgan bowlers’ misery.
Further fifties from Lewis Hill, Ben Green, and Logan van Beek saw the home side declare on 576-7, but the pitch remained true and Glamorgan’s second innings of 342-6 in 121 overs saw them home for a 13-point draw.
