The Latest Look On Welsh Football Clubs
It hasn’t been the prettiest of months for the two Welsh sides in the EFL Championship, but Swansea City and Cardiff City both look in better shape heading into the international window.
SWANSEA
Despite a difficult run of results, Russell Martin and his team secured a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Bristol City to take them into the international break and move them 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
It came on the back of a sequence of 10 defeats in 16 games that had seen the Swans drop out of play-off contention, not helped by a difficult January transfer window.
But, having picked up their first win in six games, Martin will hope his team can kick on from a positive performance and result to finish the campaign strongly.
CARDIFF
Cardiff City, meanwhile, have seen an upturn in form since the arrival of Sabri Lamouchi at the end of January. The Frenchman is Cardiff’s third manager of the season, following the sackings of both Steve Morison and Mark Hudson.
But, despite a disappointing start to the season, results have started to pick up for the Bluebirds. January signing Sory Kaba has made a big impact on the team since his arrival on loan, while Aston Villa loanee Jaden Philogene has hit a purple patch of form under Lamouchi, which has helped the Bluebirds start to move away from the relegation dogfight.
NEWPORT
In League Two, Newport County have begun to hit some form after a difficult period for the club. Draws against Grimsby, Bradford and Wimbledon saw an upturn in performances for Graham Coughlan’s side, before they picked up a crucial 3-1 win against Tranmere, which has helped County move into 16th position in the table.
WREXHAM
Wrexham continue to impress and top the table in the National League, but any potential promotion will have to be hard earned as Notts County continue to push the Reds all the way ahead of the final run-in.
It has been a remarkable season for both sides, who currently lie 23 points ahead of Woking in third place. The top two sides are separated by just three points, and both have already passed the 90-point mark this year, although Wrexham currently have a game in hand on their promotion rivals.
Phil Parkinson’s side have been in impressive form, having recently broken a club record of 25 consecutive victories, and the wins continue to come for Wrexham.
LADIES
It has been another exciting season in the Genero Adran League this year. Cardiff City continue to lead the way at the top of the table, as they lie seven points ahead of defending champions Swansea City.
In knockout action, Cardiff Met shocked Cardiff City in the final of the Genero Adran Trophy this month, making it successive cup wins with a 3-1 victory at Penybont’s SDM Glass Stadium.
