After some rescheduling, Team Wales finally started it’s boxing campaign when light-heavyweight Daniel Pitt defeated Samoa’s Dee Ioapo in the men’s 80kg category on Saturday.

A day later, Helen Jones was the fist of two Welsh fighters to take to the ring, taking on a formidable opponent in the shape of Nigeria’s Kadijat Ajishola and coming away with a brilliant split-decision win to progress to the final eight in the Women’s 54kg.

Connor Williams took to the ring in the evening, facing Namibia’s Petrus Jacobus Kotze in the Round of 16. Showing composure, strength and power, Williams dominated the bout and won by RsC.

Pitt, 20, was the first Welsh boxer in action after being the only one unfortunate enough to be drawn in the last 32 round.

The Brecon product is a youth world champion with five international gold medals and is also back-to-back British champion.

All five judges scored in favour of Pitt who will now face Papua New Guinea’s Kua Gunua Mua in the next round on Monday. Pitt picked up a cut above the eye following a clash of heads but will hope that will not affect him in his next bout.

Jones is just one win away from a medal after she won her opening bout in the women’s bantamweight division.

The 27-year-old beat Nigerian southpaw Kadijat Ajishola on a split decision. Jones is competing in her second Games having also competed in Birmingham four years ago.

All five judges awarded the Welsh boxer the first round after forcing a standing count for Ajishola by catching her with a clean combination.

The Nigerian improved with her accuracy in the second round but three judges gave Jones the round after she finished strongly. The Swansea boxer was given a standing count in the third and final round as Ajishola threw everything at her in search of the win.

But it wasn’t enough and Jones recorded her first win at a Commonwealth Games.

Heavyweight Connor Williams became the fourth Welsh boxer to reach the Commonwealth Games quarter-finals after stopping Namibia’s Petrus Jacobus Kotze.

Williams, from Swansea, forced his opponent to have two standing counts in the first round and repeated the feat in the second before the referee stopped the fight.

The 23-year-old will now fight Duken Holo Tutakitoa-Williams of Niue on Tuesday afternoon, knowing he is one fight away from a medal.

Williams joins defending champion Rosie Eccles, Niamh Brookes and Helen Jones in the quarter-finals, while Orlando Holley-Sotomi, Owain Harris-Allan and Daniel Pitt are in last 16 action on Monday.
