Swansea and Wrexham win while Newport lose at the Us: Welsh football weekend round-up

Rhodri Evans
It was a strong weekend for the Welsh sides in the EFL, with Cardiff, Swansea, and Wrexham all recording victories, while Newport County let the side down at Cambridge United.
Swansea ease past struggling Wednesday
Goals from Zan Vipotnik and Ronald sealed a 2-0 victory for Swansea at Sheffield Wednesday.
Vipotnik put speculation over his future to one side as he struck for the third time in as many games in all competitions before teeing up a late second goal from Brazilian winger Ronald.
With Swansea seemingly very close to signing Celtic striker Adam Idah, Vipotnik was handed his first start of the Championship season and repaid manager Alan Sheehan’s faith handsomely.
With this strong performance, the Slovenian international look set to stay at the Swansea.com Stadium past today’s deadline.
“I thought we were very comfortable in both halves. We controlled a lot of the first half but wanted to created a small bit more,” Sheehan said.
“We went up a gear in the second half and the only thig I can be critical of after that dominant away performance is not scoring more goals, but we looked a really strong outfit today.
“To come away with a clean sheet, two goals and potentially could have had a good few more, I think that’s very pleasing.
“I felt we limited to them to very little, but I was delighted to get the second goal.”
Wrexham get much needed points on the board
Heading into the first international break of the season, Wrexham earnt an all-important first win of the season at Millwall.
Goals from Kieffer Moore and a 108th minute clincher from Lewis O’Brien capped off a strong performance from the North Walian side, with the only down note a serious looking injury suffered by Wales international Danny Ward.
Ward fell awkwardly while trying to claim a cross during stoppage time of the Championship game at The New Den.
The 33-year-old received lengthy treatment on the pitch before he was placed on a spinal board.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said Ward was knocked unconscious and also suffered an elbow injury, and he has been taken to hospital to be checked.
“It doesn’t look promising when you see a player stretchered off like that,” Parkinson said,
“All we can do is wait and keep our fingers crossed. But Kev [Wrexham physio Kevin Mulholland] has said to me it doesn’t look good so when the physio says that to you, you’re fearing the worst.
“I think the concussion alone will rule him out for a certain period.”
Ward is set to miss Wales’ World Cup qualifying match against Kazakhstan, as well as the friendly with Canada on Tuesday. The summer spending is not stopping at Cae Ras, with Coventry midfielder Ben Sheaf set to sign for a fee in excess of £6.5 million.
County suffer another defeat against Cambridge
Newport fell to a fourth straight defeat in League Two on Saturday, as Cambridge United ran out 2-0 winners at Cledara Abbey Stadium.
With just one win so far this season and time running out to bring in new signings, manager David Hughes is suddenly under pressure to deliver.
“We missed out on a couple of players in the first part of the week, which is just how it goes,” said Hughes, who has so far made six permanent signings and brought in three loanees.
“Players make their decisions and it’s not just about football, it can come down to logistics, family and support networks.
“We are still speaking to people and hope to be busy before the deadline; we have a few spaces to be working on.
“It’s never straightforward, we are gathering information on players and need to make sure they are the right fit.”
