Southampton have announced the signing of Wales midfielder Laura Hughes, following her departure from Melbourne City.

Hughes has been capped for both Australia and Wales, but committed to the latter earlier this year, becoming a regular part of Rhian Wilkinson’s squad.

“I’ve wanted to play in England for a long time,” Hughes said.

“It’s a really competitive league so I’m looking forward to that new challenge with Southampton.”

Hughes departed Melbourne City after making 69 appearances and scoring four goals for the club, playing a pivotal role in one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

During her three seasons in Melbourne, she helped City secure three consecutive Premierships, reach the AFC Women’s Champions League Final and lift the 2025/26 A-League Championship.

Joining City ahead of the 2023/24, Hughes immediately made her mark, claiming the Club Player of the Year award in her debut campaign before receiving the Melissa Barbieri Award in 2024/25 as she emerged as one of the best players in Australia.

Her performances in City blue also earned international recognition, receiving her maiden Matildas call-up and debut against Chinese Taipei in 2024 before later switching her international allegiance to Wales, where she has since added three caps.

“My time at Melbourne City has been quite extraordinary,” Hughes said upon leaving Melbourne.

“The trophies, the milestones and all the special moments in between. From the staff to my amazing teammates and the incredible fans who supported us through it all.

“I have been so proud to play for this Club and grateful for all the incredible memories we’ve shared. I have learnt so much as a player and person throughout my time at City, which is a credit to everyone at the club.

“I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey at City and wish the club the best of luck for the future. Melbourne City will hold a very special place in my heart, and I will always look back on my time in Melbourne with so much fondness and appreciation.”
