Sophie Ingle makes Wales squad for first ever Women’s Euros

Rhian Wilkinson has named her Wales squad for this summer’s Women’s European Championships in Switzerland, with experienced midfielder Sophie Ingle included in the 23-player group.

Ingle has missed almost the entirety of the 2024/25 season, but trained with Wales during their most recent camp in May. Prior to current skipper Angharad James, Ingle wore the armband in Wilkinson’s first few games in charge.

James captains Wales to their first ever major tournament and is one of four 100 cap players travelling. Jess Fishlock, Wales’ record goalscorer and appearance maker, Hayley Ladd, and Sophie Ingle are the other centurions.

Elsewhere in the squad, uncapped goalkeeper Poppy Soper makes the plane in place of the experienced Laura O’Sullivan, who injured her ACL a few months ago. Olivia Clark and Safia Middleton-Patel are expected to compete for the number one shirt.

Joining Ladd in defence are squad regulars Charlie Estcourt, Gemma Evans, Josie Green, Rhiannon Roberts, and Lily Woodham, with younger players Ella Powell and Esther Morgan making the cut too.

In midfield, James will likely partner one of Alice Griffiths, Carrie Jones, or Ladd in the centre of the pitch, with Ceri Holland, Hannah Cain, Ffion Morgan, and Lois Joel providing the pace and guile.

Leading the line will undoubtedly be Fishlock, with one or two of Rachel Rowe, Kayleigh Barton, and Elise Hughes.

Wilkinson has favoured experience over potential for Wales’ first major tournament, with only Joel, Middleton-Patel, and Soper in the single figures for caps.

Wales have been draw in Group D with old rivals England, as well as France and the Netherlands. England’s Lionesses are reigning champions, while Netherlands won the EUROs on home soil in 2017. France have been semi-finalists in both of the previous two tournaments.

Wilkinson’s side face the Netherlands in Lucerne on Saturday July 5th, before taking on France and England in St. Gallen on the 9th and 13th.

More than 2,000 fans are expected to be in the Red Wall for each match of what will be a momentous occasion for Welsh women’s football.

The squad was announced on Thursday morning at the top of Yr Wyddfa, aligning with UEFA’s slogan for the tournament: ‘the summit of emotions.’
