Smart moves in Swansea – New Grants, New Models, and a Big Arrival on the Horizon

Electric cars in Wales just got a whole lot more interesting. Between the Government’s brand-new EV grant, smart’s own incentives, and a seriously eye-catching SUV due to hit the road this October, there’s never been a better time to plug in and power up.

A Government Boost for Going Electric

From 15 July, the UK Government has been putting its money where its mouth is with a fresh Electric Car Grant designed to make zero-emission motoring more affordable.
Here’s the gist:

  • Up to £3,750 off the price of a new electric car under £37,000.
  • Two grant levels – the bigger one for the most sustainably built vehicles, the smaller for those meeting some green criteria.
  • Funding locked in until 2028/29 (though it could end early if cash runs out).

The idea is simple – make electric cars cheaper to buy and cheaper to run, while pushing manufacturers to be greener from the factory floor to the forecourt. And with EV running costs saving drivers as much as £1,500 a year, it’s not just the planet that wins.

Smart’s Not Waiting Around

While the Government sorts its eligibility list, smart has decided to skip the queue and roll out its own EV Car Grant. That means:

  • £1,500 off the already discounted smart #1 and smart #3.
  • Prices now starting from just £28,460 for the #1, and £31,460 for the sleeker, coupe-like #3.
  • Available across the full range – from the sensible Pro models to the performance-packed Brabus versions.

Add to that the fact that selected #1 models also come with 0% APR Representative finance, and suddenly “going electric” starts sounding very tempting indeed.

Meet the smart #5 – Arriving This October

If the #1 and #3 are smart’s slick city players, then the new smart #5 is the team’s powerhouse centre-forward – big, bold, and ready to take on the likes of the Tesla Model Y.

Think chunky Land Rover Defender style front end, a dash of Mercedes G-Class’s angular body, and the space to swallow family life whole. Inside, it’s all digital displays, plush finishes, and clever storage. In the boot? A whopping 630 litres, plus a bonus ‘frunk’ up front.

The tech is just as impressive – we’re talking Europe’s fastest charging EV (400kW capable), a range of up to 335 miles, and even a Brabus version that does 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds. This isn’t a city car it’s a statement.

Why This Matters for Welsh Drivers

With the grant, smart’s own incentives, and a growing charging network across Wales, the excuses for “sticking with petrol” are running out.

Whether you want a compact runaround for Cardiff’s streets, a stylish crossover for the Gower runs, or a big family SUV that’ll make rugby-club car parks jealous, there’s now a smart for that.

Sinclair smart of Swansea sits right on Langdon Road, meaning you can see, sit in, and test drive them all without having to cross the border.
