Scarlets have announced that legendary scrum-half Gareth Davies has signed a new one-year contract with the region.

This new deal extends Davies’ association with the West Wales region into a 19th year, having made his debut for the club in 2009.

Davies has made 281 appearances for Scarlets, scoring 77 tries from scrum-half.

He is the leading Welsh try-scorer in the history of URC competition, with his 70-metre interception try against Cardiff at the Arms Park in December another iconic moment in red.

On the international stage, Davies won 77 caps for his country, played in three World Cups, was a member of a Wales side that won the Grand Slam in 2019 and lifted Six Nations trophy in 2021. He was also part of the Lions tour party in Australia in 2017 and South Africa four years later.

“I’m really happy to have re-signed,” Davies said,

“I still feel good physically, I still love playing for this club and I still feel I have a lot to offer.

“This place means a huge amount to me. I’ve spent my whole professional career here, shared some unbelievable memories with team-mates, staff and supporters and I’m excited to be in the heart of it for another season.

“There is a lot of exciting talent coming through the squad and I’m enjoying being part of that environment. The competition is good, the energy is good and there is a real determination within the group to improve and move forward.”

“Gareth represents so much of what this club is about,” added interim Director of Rugby Nigel Davies.

“I still remember him coming into the environment as a 17-year-old kid with unbelievable pace, confidence and energy. Even back then, there was something different about him. He had an instinct for the game that you can’t coach.

“To now see him going into a 19th season at his home club says everything about his character, his professionalism and his love for the Scarlets.

“What has impressed me most this season is that his competitiveness and hunger are still absolutely there. He still wants to drive standards, still wants to compete and still has the ability to produce moments that change games.

“Players like Gareth are hugely important because they connect different generations of Scarlets teams and players. Our supporters identify with him because he represents this region with the way he plays, the pride he has in the jersey and the connection he has with the club.

“He has earned enormous respect within the game and we are delighted he will continue his journey with us.”
