Ruby Evans put in a stellar floor event routine to win a first gold medal for Team Wales at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Evans was the last gymnast to take to the floor and her tumble routine was scored at 13.500 to take gold ahead of Team GB teammates Abigail Martin and Shantae-Eve Amankwaah in the silver and bronze places.

The 19-year-old won the silver medal at last year’s World Championships and was a big medal hope for Team Wales going into the Commonwealth Games.

The first few days of the Games did not go the way of Evans, who came sixth in the all-round final and fourth in the team event on Sunday, leaving the gymnastics arena in tears, before after a seventh place finish on the beam earlier on Tuesday.

She had also pulled out of the vault event yesterday, in which Abigail Roper won bronze for Wales, pipping her twin sister Emily, who finished fourth.

Just hours later, Emily took a bronze of her own in the uneven bars event.

Speaking to TNT Sports after her gold medal win, Evans spoke candidly about how she felt going into the floor event.

“I’m really happy and pleased that it’s done,” Evans said.

“I feel like I came out here angry, and I just knew I wanted to do a good floor performance, whether it was first, second, or third.

“I definitely wanted a medal, but I got a gold.”

Evans’ Team GB teammate Abigail Martin – who won bronze on the floor at the 2025 World Championships – had produced a strong routine, putting the Welsh gymnast under pressure.

“She definitely set the bar,” Evans added.

“I honestly didn’t know when I came off the floor, I could get hammered and not do very well, or it could be a really good score.

“Everyone around me in Wales is honestly really really good and I couldn’t have done this without any of them. So my biggest thank you is to them and my teammates supporting me up in the stands.”
