Remarkable Robinson record gives Cardiff hope for a Chelsea cup upset

Callum Robinson’s remarkable goalscoring record against tonight’s League Cup quarter final opponents Chelsea gives Cardiff hope of an upset.
Cardiff are top of League One by four points and have reached the League Cup quarter final for the first time in over 15 years, but will have to stage an all-time upset to best Club World Cup champions Chelsea.
One man who gives them hope for a memorable night is Callum Robinson.
The former Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion strikers has a remarkable goal scoring record against Chelsea, netting five times and registering an assist in three matches against the West London club in three appearances.
Robinson scored two of those goals in one substitute appearance for West Bromwich Albion in a 5-2 victory at Stamford Bridge in 2021, just a month before Chelsea were crowned champions of Europe for a second time.
Robinson’s record against Chelsea makes them his second ‘favourite’ opponents, after Bristol City, against whom he has scored six goals and laid on three assists in 14 games.
His current club might be two divisions lower than the Londoners, but Robinson could not help gently reminding Chelsea fans of his record, external against their team when the draw was made.
“Not many players score that many goals against a team like Chelsea over the years so it’s stuck with me quite a bit throughout my career,” he said.
“When we got them in the quarters, I was obviously going to put a little bit out there [on social media] for a bit of banter, but I didn’t know I was in people’s heads that much, to be fair.
“I thought they [Chelsea fans] would have forgotten about me a long time ago but, yeah, it’s a good part of football.”
Robinson has had to bide his time at Cardiff this season, with Yousef Salech often preferred as the starting forward under Brian Barry-Murphy.
“At the moment, every minute I get, I’m trying to push to play, to start and to play more and more games like any professional would,” said Robinson.
“I’ve just got to keep my head down and train how I’ve been training all season and try to help and affect games, and hopefully Brian [Barry-Murphy, Cardiff head coach] will give me more minutes and more chances.”
It remains to be seen if Robinson does start against Chelsea, but if he does make an appearance, the Cardiff City Stadium faithful will be hoping that Chelsea’s tormentor can continue to haunt them.
“Hopefully it will be the same tomorrow,” Robinson added. “They’re different circumstances, obviously, we’re in League One, but we’re doing really well as a group.
“It’s a big test to see what we can do tomorrow night against a team where we all would want to be.
“Magic stuff can happen in the cup and we’re going into it with great form. We’ve got nothing to lose. We’ll give it a go in our own way.”
