Rees-Zammit To Continue In NFL
Speaking in an interview during Super Bowl LIX, Louis Rees-Zammit has said that he will have a new club “in the next week or so.”
Rees-Zammit is currently a free agent after his second NFL club the Jacksonville Jaguars decided not to sign him on a future contract after the end of the 2024/25 NFL season.
The 24-year-old made his decision to leave rugby union just before last year’s Six Nations, entering the NFL’s international player pathway (IPP), a 10-week crash course for new players.
After the IPP, Rees-Zammit caused a minor stir by signing for back-to-back Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs as part of their pre-season training squad.
Having spent pre-season in Kansas, Rees-Zammit then signed for the Jacksonville Jaguars in August as part of their practice squad. As a result, the former British and Irish Lion did not play a minute of game time for the Jaguars.
“Yeah, looking for options,” Rees-Zammit told ITV Sport.
“I think in the next week or so we’ll make a decision on where I am next year, but you know the past year has been [a] crazy experience.
“Mentally, physically, it’s been tough, but it was a journey I’ve always wanted to be on so I’m loving it.”
Since Rees-Zammit’s last appearance for Wales – the 2023 World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Argentina – his former side have failed to win a match.
With the former Gloucester wing now a free agent, there was some speculation that he would make a shift return to his former sport. However, this latest news appears to pour water on that theory.
“It’s been a very tough year, but it’s one that I’ve learned so much [from] and I can really look forward to this year coming,” said Rees-Zammit.
“Definitely active and that’s why I said next week my decision will be made, so hopefully I’ll find a team then and I’ll look forward to pre-season.”
While Rees-Zammit did not play an NFL match last year, he did appear in three Chiefs preseason matches ahead of a season where they again reached the Super Bowl. This time, however, they were soundly beaten 40-22 by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kansas City assistant head coach Dave Toub, who worked with Rees-Zammit last summer, still believes the Welshman can make it in American football.
“I love him. I really like him. He was a hard worker,” Toub told AFP in the build-up to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.
“He didn’t have the base fundamentals that these guys have; there’s going to be a learning curve for him.
“I hope he doesn’t give up. I think after two or three years, if it doesn’t click by then, time to go back to rugby.”
The former Wales and British and Irish Lions wing also received the backing of the Eagles’ former rugby league player Jordan Mailata.
“Everyone is going to face a hurdle at some point,” Mailata also told AFP.
“You have to want to jump over that hurdle. I want Louis to keep going. It’s not over yet son.”
