James Benjamin has rejoined Dragons RFC as an academy coach following his recent retirement from playing.

Benjamin made 104 appearances for the region across 13 seasons, after making his debut in 2013, and finished his playing career at the end of the 2025/26 season.

The hugely popular Newport-born forward – affectionally known as Jumbo to friends and fans alike – operated in the back row, centre and at hooker for Dragons, and will begin a new position in the region’s academy.

“It’s a huge privilege to be able to remain with a club that has been such a massive part of my life,” Benjamin said.

“As a former Dragons Academy product, it’s hugely exiting to now be working with the next generation and help the club continue to develop future Dragons.”

“We’re delighted that James is joining the Academy coaching team and continuing his long and successful association with the club,” Lewis Roberts, Academy Manager, added.

“He knows exactly what is required to come through our Academy system and into the senior set-up as a former product himself and he’s not only a talented coach but also a superb role model for young players at the club.

“James has been heavily involved with the Academy set-up over the last few seasons, as he combined coaching with his playing duties, so this will be a seamless transition and an exciting appointment.”
