Ramsey Mexico move puts spanner in the works for Cardiff

Aaron Ramsey’s reported agreement with Mexican side Club Universidad Nacional – known as Pumas UNAM – has brought a new twist to the Cardiff City managerial search.
The news agency PA media reported on Sunday that Ramsey would potentially become the first high-profile British player to play in the Mexican league should the move be completed.
This development represents a further blow to Cardiff City’s search for a new manager, after Nathan Jones – another man who was high on Cardiff’s list of potential suitors – signed a five-year deal with Charlton Athletic, having guided them into the Championship via the play-offs.
Ramsey was Cardiff’s most recent manager, having led them in three matches at the end of last season as an interim player-manager – albeit he never played due to a hamstring injury.
After the end of the season, having previously asserted that his focus in the near future was helping Wales reach the 2026 World Cup as playing captain, Ramsey appeared to re-open the door to management at his boyhood club.
Speaking after the final game of the season, Ramsey surprised a few with his comments.
“I’m open, and I’m sure those discussions [with the Cardiff hierarchy] will come. The club has so much potential. This is a step back. Hopefully, we can address the things that need to happen so everyone can buy into something again and give us and the fans what they deserve.
“There are still a few things I need to sort out and think about over the coming weeks. I love being in this role. I think the players have really bought into it. The habits the coaching staff have instilled into this squad over the last few weeks have been evident. I don’t know [about my future], is the answer. We’ll see.”
Ramsey shares the same agent as Pumas manager Efrain Juarez, and has been willing to take his playing career beyond the British Isles, previously appearing for Juventus and Nice.
