Guest columnist Peter Ryan reports on a frustrating night for Penybont in the first qualifying round of the 2026/27 Conference League.

In 2023, the two faced off, and drama unfolded. They first clashed at the iconic Brewery Field.

That game ended 1–1 and it was all to play for heading into the second leg. Nothing could separate the two sides, and an extra-time goal from FC Santa Coloma gave them the victory.

Three years later, they met again, this time in the Welsh capital. It was a frustrating night in Cardiff, as the hosts suffered a 1–0 defeat.

The excitement at the Cardiff City Stadium was palpable as Penybont set off on another European adventure.

The game began at a frantic pace, with both teams feeling each other out. Penybont were caught offside early on, while a succession of fouls prevented either side from settling.

FC Santa Coloma looked the more threatening, but efforts from Guillaume López and Álex Muñoz failed to test the goalkeeper.

After those early warning signs, the visitors broke through in the 16th minute; Predrag Muñoz set it up, and López put it in the back of the net. The rest of the half was competitive, with the visitors dictating the tempo, and they went into the break leading.

Penybont got their best chance of the match just seven minutes into the second half, when Ryan Hill was felled just outside the box.

Max Melbourne’s subsequent shot from the freekick was handled in the area by a Santa Coloma defender, giving Bont a chance from the spot.

Ryan Hill stepped up for the penalty, but the keeper saved it. The game ebbed and flowed, but when the final whistle blew, FC Santa Coloma were victorious.

The stats from the game tell the story of the contest, as FC Santa Coloma led in most categories.

They created more chances throughout the match, with 11 shots compared to Penybont’s seven. Five of Penybont’s seven chances were blocked, demonstrating how the visitors were able to effectively prevent the Welsh side from having a clear sight of goal.

The statistics suggest that FC Santa Coloma were on the front foot, which was ultimately the deciding factor.

Penybont will now travel to Andorra on 16 July in search of a turnaround victory.

Rhys Griffiths’ side have a lot of work to do in less than a week. Last time they faced off in Andorra, it was a tight contest, and extra time was needed to separate them.

If Penybont want to cause a tremendous upset, they will have to disrupt FC Santa Coloma’s possession, which was a massive factor in the first leg.

As a team, they know how to control the game with a strong passing style. Last season’s stats back this up, with an average possession of 64% and a high pass accuracy of 85.8%.

The tie is far from over. Penybont now have the chance to write another memorable chapter in their history, with 90 minutes standing between them and something truly special: the chance to face former European Cup Winners’ Cup finalists Rapid Vienna later this month.
