“Our rivalry with Scotland is bigger” – Georgia Evans and Keira Bevan preview opening Six Nations game
For the third-consecutive time in a tournament, Wales and Scotland will open their campaigns by playing each other in what has shaped up to be a fierce rivalry over the years.
It has been a one-sided affair in recent encounters with Scotland prevailing in the last three games, the first two being tight affairs with only two and three points in the score. The Scots put on a more dominant display in their last outing against Wales in the opening game of last year’s World Cup, winning 38-8.
But as the team matures under Sean Lynn who celebrates one year in charge of the Welsh Women, they will believe that they can use their experience and knowledge of their rivals to turn results in their favour come the weekend.
This week, Wales lock, Georgia Evans and scrum half, Keira Bevan (who previously produced heroics against Scotland) joined Alex Cuthbert and Dillon Lewis on the Sportin Wales Podcast to discuss the upcoming tournament, mentioning their next game.
Evans said: “We play against them all the time so we should know exactly what’s coming.
“But you don’t every time we turn up it’s something completely different!
“I think that is the same with us though, we’re a completely different team to last time.
“Scotland are very similar to us, they have got a big forward pack, they love to maul it, love to hit it up front, but they have rapid backs.”
Keira Bevan, whose last-minute penalty was the deciding factor in Wales’ win against Scotland in the 2021 World Cup, also weighed in on the rivalry: “I think our rivalry with Scotland is bigger than what it is with England and Ireland”
“The feeling has been mutual since the New Zealand World Cup.”
Head Coach Sean Lynn has rang in the changes ahead of the tournament, calling up nine uncapped players, two of which in Jorja Aiono and Seren Singleton make their debuts in tomorrow’s opener after impressing staff and teammates in training.
Bevan said: “Some of the girls we have got coming in like Seren Singleton on the wing…what a short, powerful girl she is.
“She punches well above her weight so I’m really excited to see her go”
Evans added: “Jorja Aiono and all these young girls are 18 years-old trying to out-run you and out-hit you and it makes me want to step up my game.
I said to Keira it makes training so much better now.”
Wales will be looking to improve on last year’s Six Nations performance and may well do with a coach who has had the full time to settle into his role. They host Scotland in the Principality Stadium tomorrow at 4:40PM.
