Ospreys Get European Revenge As Scarlets And Cardiff Exit

Rhodri Evans

Ospreys got revenge over their West Walian rivals Scarlets in the European Challenge Cup round of 16, beating them 36-14 to set up a home quarter-final with Lyon.

Last weekend, the two sides faced each other in the United Rugby Championship, with Scarlets running out 38-22 winners, but Ospreys put that right on Sunday, with a six-try victory.

Forwards Rhys Davies, Adam Beard, Dewi Lake, and Jac Morgan all crossed, with Jack Walsh and Daniel Kasende putting the gloss on the score line in the second half. Halfbacks Reuben Morgan-Williams and Dan Edwards continued their excellent form on the domestic stage, leading the Ospreys to another European quarter-final.

Scarlets responded through Wales internationals Eddie James and Blair Murray, but it was too little too late for the region whose attentions now turn to qualifying for the URC play-offs.

Mark Jones’s side stormed out of the blocks, scoring four first half tries and putting the result firmly in Ospreys’ hands. Having rested a few key players for the league match last week, Walsh, Kasende, Keelan Giles, and Keiran Williams all came into the backline and brought an intensity that Scarlets could not live with.

The match itself was pockmarked with flashes of derby day tension, with Justin Tipuric and Vaea Fifita exchanging words before Henry Thomas and Morgan Morris squared up.

Cardiff Fade After Connacht Comeback

Despite trailing 21-8 and subsequently coming back to trail 21-20, Cardiff lost 35-20 to Connacht in their round of 16 European clash.

Rey Lee-Lo’s first half try was cancelled out by scores from Matt Devine, Finn Treacy, Sean Jansen as Connacht looked in danger of pulling away from Cardiff.

The visitor’s rallied well though, scoring through Ben Thomas and Josh Adams to get back within a point.

Connacht finished the stronger, however, with Shayne Bolton and Paul Boyle putting gloss on the scoreline for the Galway side.

Wales internationals Adams and Taulupe Faletau returned from injury lay-offs and looked impressive, but their impacts were not enough to put their side into the quarter-finals.

Like Scarlets, Matt Sherratt’s side can now put their full efforts into qualifying for the URC play-offs via a top eight place in the league.
