Ospreys Fall Short At The Death

Ospreys fell short of adding a sixth consecutive victory after falling to a 19-15 loss at Edinburgh’s Hive Stadium.

The Welsh side boasted the return of Sportin Wales founder Alex Cuthbert, making his first start in more than a year, along with on-loan Cheetahs number eight Jeandre Rudolph for his Ospreys debut.

Opposite them however was an Edinburgh side boasting seven internationals released from Scotland’s Six Nations squad.

Ospreys took the lead in the 10th minute after a penalty from a dominant scrum through the boot of Dan Edwards but this would prove their only points of the half.

Edinburgh responded first through a try from flanker Hamish Watson after a break by Fijian Viliame Mata before Scotland squad member Ben Healy used the breeze to good effect scoring a further eleven points off his boot, including a penalty from halfway.

Ospreys rallied strongly in the second half with Wales international hooker Sam Parry going over following a driving maul but Edwards’ conversion cruelly struck the upright.

The away side could also call on Morgan Morris, Rhys Davies and Owen Williams who were all returning from injury, with Morris making his first appearance this calendar year, having not played since his side’s win against Benetton in the European Challenge Cup in December.

Morris crashed over the tryline after the hour to reduce the deficit further, after his side had used the wind to their advantage in the territorial battle.

Healy slotted a penalty for the home side in the final 10 minutes but Ospreys continued to push in the final minutes but knocked on from a lineout in the final minute with Edinburgh seeing the remaining seconds out.

The result leaves, the Welsh region in 10th in the URC and outside of the playoff positions while Edinburgh are fourth.

Elsewhere, there were losses for the Scarlets, Cardiff and Dragons in a difficult weekend for the Welsh regions.
