World Champion and double Olympic silver medal winner Becky North has been announced as Beicio Cymru’s ambassador ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

The Glasgow Games will mark North’s first engagement in her new ambassadorial role.

The former cyclist enjoyed an outstanding career at the highest level of international cycling. She became a double world champion in 2013, winning the Sprint and Keirin titles. She then went on to win two silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

North also represented Wales at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. She won silver in the women’s Sprint and bronze in the women’s 500m Time Trial.

Through her new role, North hopes to use her experience and profile to encourage more young people into cycling. In particular, she wants to inspire more girls to take part and ensure they have the support that is needed to fulfil ambitions they may have.

“I’m incredibly proud to become a Beicio Cymru Ambassador and to have the opportunity to give something back to the sport that has given me so much,” North said.

“Cycling has taken me on an amazing journey, and I’m passionate about helping more young people discover the opportunities and enjoyment that the sport can offer.

“I’m particularly keen to encourage more women and girls to get involved and to show them that there is a place for everyone in cycling.”

“Her achievements on the track speak for themselves. However, her passion for giving back to the sport, alongside her real-life experiences across the pathway makes her an ideal ambassador for Beicio Cymru, particularly as we enter the most exciting time with the biggest opportunities for cycling in Wales than ever before.

“Becky understands what it takes to reach the highest level. She also recognises the importance of inspiring the next generation to begin their own cycling journey.

“Her experience and profile will help us encourage more young people to get involved, particularly women and girls.

“Glasgow 2026 is a fitting first engagement for Becky. We are delighted that she, and her family will join us at the velodrome in Glasgow and support the Team Wales cycling team.”
