Teenager Tom Norton became the youngest player to record a first-class hattrick for Glamorgan as their match with Somerset enters an intriguing final day.

Norton, making his first-class debut this weekend at the age of 18, helped reduce Somerset to 32-6 late on day two, after the home side surrendered a 125-run lead in the first innings.

The seamer removed England hopeful James Rew for a 13-ball duck, catching the edge to Asa Tribe at slip, before again finding the edge of Tom Lammonby’s bat to wicketkeeper Chris Cooke.

On a hattrick, Norton steamed in with the Glamorgan faithful clapping him in, fired a full ball into the pads of Archie Vaughan, who missed a swipe across the line.

Up went the umpire’s finger and jubilation ensued.

“It was great, a moment I’ll cherish for the rest of my life”, said Norton.

“It was a pretty surreal moment to get a hat-trick and get them six down overnight”.

Glamorgan had been bowled out for 229 in their first innings with Migael Pretorius taking three for 50 as the Somerset seamers dominated, Ben Kellaway top-scoring with 59.

Early on day three, Somerset recovered thanks to a healthy partnership between Tom Abell and Lewis Gregory. Abell is in fine form, making a stylish 71 to go with his 86 in the first innings.

The batter was eventually dismissed by Ryan Hadley, who finished with match figures of 5-97, leaving Glamorgan a target of 283.

Openers Asa Tribe and Zain-ul-Hassan started in serene fashion, putting on 81 for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed by Craig Overton.

Soon after, Kiran Carlson nicked a Jake Ball to Rew behind the stumps, and Kellaway came to the crease.

The young duo of Tribe and Kellaway managed to recover somewhat, but were dismissed late by Miguel Pretorius, along with experienced batter Colin Ingram, to leave the home side with work to do on the fourth and final day.

Glamorgan’s tail has wagged at times this season, and they will need it to do so again, with batters Sean Dickson and Chris Cooke marshalling things from one end.
