Newport through on penalties but Cardiff out: FA Cup weekend round-up

Newport County knocked division rivals Gillingham out of the FA Cup first round on penalties, as Cardiff tasted defeat at Peterborough.
With Wrexham and Swansea in Championship action this weekend, we’ve split the round-up into two. You can find our thoughts on their results here.
Newport through on pens after extra time drama
Newport County ended their wait for a home victory on Saturday, progressing through to the FA Cup second round via a penalty shoot-out.
The Exiles had not won at Rodney Parade since March – a run of 14 home matches – but put that streak to bed on a dramatic afternoon.
With the game 1-1 going into extra time, the home side looked to have sealed progress to the next round when Cameron Antwi scored in extra-time only for former Newport loan striker Seb Palmer-Houlden to equalise with minutes remaining.
After the first two penalties were converted, the next three were not, before Antwi gave Newport the advantage. Form there, Newport converted twice more and won the shootout 4-3.

Cardiff knocked out of Cup by Posh
Cardiff City were knocked out of the FA Cup by League One rivals Peterborough United, with Harry Leonard’s strike the difference between the sides.
It was an unfortunate goal for Cardiff to concede, with Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s deflected effort on 39 minutes falling kindly into the path of Leonard, who slotted past Nathan Trott for the game’s only goal.
A half-rotated Bluebirds side dominated the ball against the home side after the break, but failed to make the breakthrough.
Defeat for Cardiff marks the first time that they have gone out in the first round of the FA Cup since 1994.
“Obviously we wanted to progress as far as we wanted in the competition and today we weren’t good enough to get that job done,” said manager Brian Barry-Murphy.
“We treat every competition with the upmost importance, we want to create a mentality in the dressing room where we try to give our supporters performances they enjoy every time. Today we weren’t able to do that.”
