The Glasgow 2026 organising company has announced the largest ever para sport medal programme in Commonwealth Games history.

The Games will be the fourth time Scotland has hosted the multi-sport event and will take place between July 23 and August 2, 2026.

The Commonwealth Games will be staged across four venues within a compact 8-mile radius over 10 days of competition with 200 Gold medals available amongst nearly 3000 athletes across 74 nations.

Glasgow 2026 has confirmed the programme will include over 80 events across 9 sports, with Boxing’s events to be confirmed at a later date.

The action-packed sporting programme will take place at the Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Scottish Exhibition Centre (SEC), Scotstoun Stadium and Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

The para sport programme will have a record number 46 medal events across the 6 sports in the games (Para-Athletics, Para-Swimming, Para-Cycling Track, Para-Powerlifting, 3 x 3 Wheelchair Basketball and Para-Bowls).

“Glasgow 2026 is a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow and we have a clear vision that it will be brilliantly different. The huge Track Cycling and Swimming programmes, alongside the return of the Mile in Athletics, a wealth of disciplines introduced to the Games for the first time across the Para Athletics, Para Track Cycling and Para Swimming programmes, not to mention the increase in 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball teams, makes the Glasgow 2026 sporting programme a really exciting prospect for fans and athletes alike.

“I’m confident that with action-packed programmes across all four venues in the city, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Glasgow 2026 is set to be a world-class sporting celebration, filled with passion, fun, and outstanding sport!”

The programme includes several changes to the last games held in Birmingham 2022, including the return of the ‘Miracle Mile race’ in athletics, last included in the event programme at the 1966 Games, and made famous by Roger Bannister’s historical sub-4-minute race at the 1954 Games in Vancouver.

Also added in the athletics programme is the 4x400m mixed relays. In the para event programme, several new events have been added (7 in athletics, 2 in swimming and 2 in cycling), with 8 para-medals up for grabs.

The velodrome timetable will be busier than any other games, with a total of 26 medals available across all disciplines.

The Tollcross International Swimming Centre will also have the most extensive swim programme in Commonwealth Games history, with 56 medals including two new events for the first time, the men’s 800m Freestyle and the women’s 1500m Freestyle races.

“The detailed programme supports crucial planning for us and the individual sports, as well as the athletes aiming for selection.

“The expanded para event schedule is an excellent addition to what promises to be an historic Games, paving the way for the Commonwealth Games of the future, including the centenary event in 2030.”
