Kamwa late late show keeps Newport fate in their own hands

If you want a rollercoaster story, ask a Newport County fan how their heart rate was at the very end of their match against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
With less than three minutes to go of the 19 added on, Newport were bottom of League Two and staring into the relegation abyss.
Bobby Kamwa, who opened the scoring what felt like a lifetime ago, had missed a penalty in the 105th minute, saved by league debutant Tom Donaghy.
The 26-year-old, who doubled his league goal scoring record at the end of what has been a difficult season, picked himself up from the floor to pounce and poke home and move the Exiles out of the relegation zone.
The reason Kamwa’s heroics came so late in the game, was because it was delayed due to the lengthy treatment for injured Latics keeper Matthew Hudson, Donaghy came on and pulled off a number of key saves to protect the visitors’ point.
Making his league debut, the 23-year-old then reacted and dived the right way as Kamwa looked to win the game from the spot having been fouled in the area.
The scenes as Kamwa raced through to score the vital winning goal were the stuff of legend. Newport limbs erupted from all four corners of Rodney Parade.
The goal takes Newport out of the relegation places and up to 21st, with Fuchs’ side travelling to bottom of the table Barrow next Saturday knowing a win will guarantee their EFL survival.
A draw could be enough if results go their way, although no Exiles fan will want to go through the drama of this game that saw Oldham, eventually, lose for the fourth time in a row.
“I’ve been in several traumatic games but that’s probably all the way on top of the list,” said Fuchs.
“Even for just how the game finished, missing a 106th minute penalty but keeping believing.
“But we’ve spoken for a long time about how we keep believing. We need to believe that we can make things happen.”
