Wales’ record goalscorer and appearance maker Jess Fishlock is set to retire from professional football at the end of the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) season.

Seattle Reign announced the news on Tuesday evening and said in a statement that Fishlock is “one of the most iconic careers in club and league history.”

The final regular league game of this season is set to be on November 1, marking the end of an illustrious club career for the Welsh legend.

Fishlock retired from international football in October last year, but signed a one-year deal with Reign the next month, underlining her desire for one last club season.

“It’s hard to put into words what Seattle and this club mean to me,” Fishlock told Reign’s website.

“This is where I’ve grown, where I’ve fought, where I’ve experienced some of the best moments of my career.

“I’ll never take for granted the people, the fans and the city that have supported me through it all, and I’m going to give everything I have in this final season.”

Fishlock, who scored 48 goals in 165 games for Wales, signed for the Reign in 2013, ahead of their inaugural season. She has made 219 NWSL appearances for the club, leading the side to three NWSL Shields and three Championship appearances.

On a personal level, she won the league’s overall Most Valuable Player award in 2021.

“She has carried this club on her shoulders at times and has always done it with pride,” Reign head coach Laura Harvey said.

“Her impact on this team, this city and the sport as a whole is immeasurable.”

Fishlock began her club career at hometown club Cardiff City, before moving to Bristol Academy, AZ Alkmaar, and Melbourne Victory before signing for Seattle.

During her time in the NWSL, she signed for a number of clubs on loan during the off-season, featuring for Glasgow City, FFC Frankfurt, Melbourne City and Victory, Olympique Lyonnais, and Reading.

She won the Champions League at Frankfurt and Lyon, as well as the Eredivisie twice with AZ.

In March, she joined Wales’ coaching staff as a technical assistant for the Women’s World Cup qualifier against Czech Republic.
